I've just turned 18 years old and want to learn how I can legally acquire and own a hand gun and how to properly operate one. How can I do this and what is involved? Thank you.

The previous advice about taking a class offered by the NRA is spot on. There are costs associated with NRA training but it is worth every penny.

Not knowing in what state you reside I'll offer the following;

Check with your state Game & Fish Dept for a "Hunter Education" class. Most of the time these classes are free and are not just about hunting. They contain many hours of safe handling of rifles, shotguns and handguns. Hunter Ed is a good base program to build on.

Federal law is such that a Federally licensed dealer can only sell a handgun to a person 21 years of age or older. Federal law however also allows for a person 18 and over to possess a handgun. Federally it is legal for an 18 to accept a handgun as a gift or be sold one in a private sale.

There are a few states that provide for persons 18 and up to acquire a concealed carry license.

Some states have more strict legislation that the Federal Government though. In those states the law for possession and purchase is 21.

I know my additional info was not requested but it is relevant to your situation. As said before check with the NRA for a basic handgun class.

Depends on your state and sometimes local laws, but you can probably find the information by searching the NRA site.

In my state, I believe you have to be 21 to get a concealed carry permit, but only after taking a hunter education class and passing your background checks.

Also, once obtained, the wait for purchasing guns is normally waived, again...check your local gun laws or local gun club.

Talk to your local police department. They usually know who is teaching such classes in your area. If you are a member of NRA, you can go online and find this info. if you are not already an NRA member, be sure to join asap.
