So my Fiancée and I decided that the litter maid weren't cutting it anymore and we bought the Cat Genie. (www.catgenie.com). It seems a bit scary at first I would imagine, but none of the cats have ever had a problem changing litter boxes or litter. We slowly moved the litter boxes into the bathroom (where the Cat Genie is hooked up). But they won't defecate inside the Cat genie, only urinate. We also tried covering the entire unit with a black plastic bag and we found several poos. Now the bag is off and only one poo found so far. We still have the old standard litter boxes. I don't want to put stress on any of the cats by totally removing the boxes. I understand that litter boxes are really important to cats and need to be clean and in the right place at all times. I just really want them to use the Cat Genie! It’s a healthy alternative and I don't have to clean it (push a button, everything goes down the toilet).

Please suggest any suggestions!

Try covering the box with the plastic bag again. Over a period of weeks (months?) remove more and more of the bag.

It sounds like a privacy issue...is the box located in a busy bathroom? Are they used to a covered box?

When I first started to use my automatic cat box, one cat kept hissing and swiping at it, which activated it, so he'd run away, etc, until he saw my other cat come and use it. Then the first cat seemed to be like "so THAT'S what it's for!!" No problems after that...

try sprinkling some catnip onto the granules...not alot just enough to attract them....you should really remove the other litter boxes and give this their only alternative

Take the old litter box away entirely. Do not give cats choices. Don't worry. You won't stress the cats. It takes a hell of a lot to stress out a cat.

Take the litter box away and lock the cats in the bathroom for a week by then they will be used to it.
