You. Material goods shouldn't matter. I am always just happy to be able to spend some alone time with my girlfriend on my birthday, or any other day for that matter. Just make a "present" of yourself for the day. Every man likes to be paid attention to (as do women), especially if you make a point of letting him know what you're doing.

its still the most popular answer just dont give it to him in front of a crowd.

id also give him something in addition to a handmade gift though.
like a gift card to his fave electronics store or something for his car if hes into cars.
