I read Phillip Pullmans His Dark Materials trilogy and I'm christian I didn't know when I bought the book that he was atheist. Obviously while reading it I discovered that it was. It didn't change my faith but it did open a lot of 'What if?' questions. It opened me to different veiwpoints.
My question is why do christians hate it so much? I mean all it did was make me think outside the box. To think beyond the information given in any media. Which nowadays seems a little un-christianlike.
It just makes me feel like most christians don't believe in their faith enough to watch a movie or read a book that doesn't have their veiwpoints...so I watched the movie or read the book and now it magically converted me to non-belief!
By the way I was eleven when I read them. Pease don't be harsh I'm only asking a question not bashing my own faith.

There are some really level-headed answers on here but I think I'm going to wait a little longer to pick my Fav.
By the way I'm 19 and work at a Christian Org. with children (I do not teach them to not believe in God and if it warrants it I pray with them i.e. terrible day at school, aunt dying, and other troubles they may have). I believe the Parents shape the child (or at least they should) not the media. There is no one the children look up to more and mold themselves to more than their parents. Most of the children I've seen are mirror-images of their parents mentally and spiritually.
To say I can't be truthful because I don't have children is like saying you can't write because you don't have a leg. I'd let my children read anything in their age range. If it opens their mind to possibilities and teaches them to think outside the box then sure. It makes you more of a problem-solver and a more understanding person as well. Who wouldn't like that for their child???

Most of them haven't read the books or seen the movie, yet they tell each other not to see the movie or let their kids see it. Herd mentality. I've gotten four e-mails from people bashing this movie, and they haven't even seen it. I asked about that too, "Is your faith so weak that it can't withstand a movie?" The closed-minded attitude makes Christianity look weak and hysterical, I agree with you.

The fuss about children seeing it is priceless in its irony. Here we have people carrying on about how impressionable children are, and I guess they would know.

I think it's great that you read the books and are willing to experience something before you formulate an opinion of it. I'm going to read the books over the weekend and see the movie on Tuesday, so I'll have a better idea what all the fuss is about, but so far as I can tell, the movie is a "milder" version of the books because they didn't want to roll the dice with a film budget that size.

Liking or disliking any tale could be consistent with own selection. I do in basic terms not see the logic in claiming that "The Golden Compass" is so undesirable. thinking the Bible is recognized with the help of many as a literary masterpiece. What does that say approximately writing frequently. I advise the factors have replaced have they not? Peace to you.

I heard (hearsay) that it i just a rebuttal to "The Chronicals of Narnia," which we all know had Christian overtones. What I want to know is why you don't ever hear any atheists saying "Don't watch this movie, it's too Christian." I think people need to get over themselves and just accept the fact that there are OTHER beliefs out there other than ones own. And honestly, what's so wrong with people deciding for themselves!?

Life is a series of choices---how you spend your money, which is a gift from God, is important if you wish to honor Him. Personally, I'd prefer to give my money to poor people or children suffering in the world than to support a film based on "killing God" which is senseless albeit theatrical. Christians are called to spread the Gospel and support those measures, not to support any form of falsehood or lie. What does that say about Christians if we don't stand up for our beliefs and condemn movies and books such as this...if not us, who will? How many more missionaries could we send if we directed our finances more in keeping with God's directives? Satan does not attempt to overthrow the church by direct measures, He chips away at the foundation by sly deceit and many people with no strong religious beliefs will fall prey to him. He is very adept at mixing in lies and untruth with sensual pleasures or our own justifications.....witness Eve.

because the authors stated purpose is to get children to question GOD. i dont want atheist pushing their beliefs on my kids. what concern is it of his if my kids believe im GOD or not? he knows what he believes. why cannt he leave it at that? why does he feel its his job to spread atheism?
its not that i dont feel comfortable enough with my faith to hear other peoples opinions. but this movie is marketed to children. they think theyre just watching an innocent movie. they dont know that the author is trying to push his beliefs on them.
if a movie were to come out that was written by a racist and had racist overtones, would you expect black people to just be open minded about it? of course not. so why should we just stand by while people trash our faith?
its a free country. hes free to put his movie out there and were free to warn other christians about his motives. if you dont like what christians are saying about it, just ignore us. go and watch it.

the plot basically is about killing God (in a somewhat metaphorical sense, but that's the main idea behind it). In the end they kill God and everyone is allowed to do what they want. Which personally, I don't agree with at all. The movie is geared toward children. Is this what we want our children exposed to? I mean, children are the most impressionable people in our world and their minds are easily made to believe whatever they see or hear. Killing God, who, whether you believe in Him or not, is good and kind, is about the most terrible thing to be showing kids. That's basically saying that its okay to kill any good guy, the guy who keeps us all in line because then we'd be able to do as we please.

just what i think :)

Most christians will think that if it is not a work of christ, it is a work of the devil. Hence they will not read (or see the movie from which it is based) any non-christian author.

I am a Holy Spirit filled Christian.
I don't really care because there are so many temptations
in this world IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED JESUS YOU WILL STAY COMMITTED TO HIM.

And if the parents don't want their kids to see the movie that is their business
