I have a friend who wants to serve cupcakes at her wedding. But I think layered cake would be better.

Yeah it's fine. Trust me I felt the same way you do now but I saw a couple layouts and I'm all for them now. Here are a few links to individual cupcakes and some layouts (Right click>>Open in New Window).

IMO, a wedding is an expression of the couple's tastes, etc, and I don't think a wedding cake is necessary at all. We're having a 2 tiered wedding cake for the cutting, then cupcakes for our guests. I love the idea of cupcakes for a few reasons. Wedding cakes usually don't taste very good, you're limited in the flavors you can have, they're too formal for what we're planning, and we like the idea that cupcakes are a little offbeat, but people still get cake.

With cupcakes, you can serve loads of different flavors to satisfy all of your guests-we'll have chocolate, orange, carrot, yellow, spice, strawberry...plus, it's much cleaner-each person gets their very own serving, and we'll have lots of kids there--kids love cupcakes, and we're having a very informal clambake at a local picnic grove, so it just really fits in with the overall vibe of the day. Thankfully, not every bride feels the need to have church/banquet hall/huge white cake!

Good for your friend!

Hi

What about the best of both worlds? Cup cakes are really popular at the moment but why not combine both cup cakes and a more traditional shape? Cup cakes can work out to be more expensive depending on how they are decorated because they have to be individually decorated.

See a picture of a wedding cake with both cup cakes and a layered cake here: http://www.my-wedding-cake-ideas.com/wedding-cake.html

I don't really like the cupcake thing for a wedding, but to each his own. If they want to do that then they can. I would have a nice decoration on top of each. Maybe their monogram, or have the icing piped on so the whole top of the cupcake looks like a rose. If they are doing it because they think they are going to be saving money they are mistaken. Making hundreds of cupcakes is just as much work, maybe even more, because they become mini cakes - as making a layered cake.

It's her wedding - let her do what she wants. It's not your fault if it doesn't turn out the way she wants it to. I went to a wedding with cupcakes and it was actually very well done...they were done in the same sort of presentation as a layered cake and there were different flavors..including carrot cake! yum! If she really wants it done that way - it can be done elegantly. Also - I would say she should be under 40. Older than that - may give the appearance that she just cheaped out. Have fun planning! :-)

I think cupcakes would be cute. After all they really are just small cakes and people generally get a serving that size anyway. It's all about what makes the couple happy and what they like.

The layered cake is definitely traditional...
If she wants to do cupcakes... then do them... it's her wedding.
I have seen these cupcake cakes. They can be so elaborate. It is basically a bunch of cupcakes placed side-by-side to form an object or such, then the frosting is what ultimately connects them to make the picture complete...
Look into it, that might be a good way to go...

its not your wedding, how would you have felt if someone tried to tell you your dresses or flowers weren't good choices.

I think if she wants to serve cupcakes, then that's her choice, maybe cupcakes is just more who she is than a big fancy cake. It's her day, it should be exactly how she wants it.

Cupcake towers are actually EXTREMELY popular right now, as are tiered cheesecakes, etc. A lot fo brides don;t like cake and want soomething that's still attractive to serve their guests.
