If you're not going to frost them, then put the sugar crystals on before baking...otherwise, they won't stick. My regular sugar cookies - I frost and then sprinkle. For my lemon sugar cookies, I only sprinkle before I bake.

Sprinkle with white granulated sugar before you bake and then with a little colored sugar as soon as they're out of the oven.

Before you bake them.You can also dip the tops in sugar again after baking,while there still warm.
