Not ALL....only the broadcasts transmitted "INTO THE AIR"
And they ONLY have to be Digital transmissions....NOT HD either.

That leaves Cable and Satellite systems left.....they're slated to go Digital in 2012....

They'll be digital - which is not the same as HD.

This switchover only affects over-the-air broadcasts, meaning only those who are using an antenna will be affected. All TVs over 20" sold since 2000 already have the new tuner required for digital broadcasts.

Satellite and cable customers won't be affected.

Finally, starting in 2008, you'll be able to obtain coupons from the government that will let you buy a new tuner for your older TVs for $30 or so.

No.

After 2/17/2009 almost all over the air broadcasts will be digital, but not all of them will be "high-def". Quite a few will be in "standard definition".

standard definition = 480 lines of resolution = similar to DVD quality

High-def = at least 720 lines of resolution = at least roughly twice the resolution as standard definition

Not necessarily in high def quality. But the signal will be digital (better quality) as opposed to analog now.

only local broadcast stations. Cable and satellite will not be affected. The fcc just wanted to sell off those band segments for private interest at the expense of the public

Over-the-air analog channels will be phased out by 2009.

It's going to be digital. Hopefully most of them will be HD for my TV. =)

I already get digital tv signals where I live. In fact, when they cut my satellite, I can have crystal clear, high definition pictures thanks to the digital broadcasting! =)
