Bose is all about the brand name. Anyone who brags about them is a fool to the salesmen and commercials and i laugh in their face!

where a typical speaker company would spend +90% on sound quality, engineering and manufacturing, bose spends more than 60% on marketing.

Bose $900 speakers have $5 paper drivers.
no or very poor mid range
exagerated mid bass.

Take any Bose product and divide the price by 6 and that should be its competitve price point in relative quality of sound and build.

Okay.... my recommendation is actually testing the product out at a major electronic store such as Best Buy, Circuit City or Apple Store. The reason being is that when I was doing a lot of research about the Bose speakers, a lot of people were not recommending them to me. They kept using these acronyms...

B.. Buy
O.. Other
S.. Sound
E.. Equipment

But because I used to work at CompUSA, I know how the Bose Companion 5 sounded like and I was very impressed with it. The current speakers I had at that time was a Spherex 5.1 Speaker System which is a really great speaker system considering it has the Mirage Speakers with Omnipolar technology.

But I decided to upgrade to the Bose Companion 5 and I could hear the difference in Music as well as Movies and Games. I was hearing things I have never heard before. Not to mention, the Companion 5 does not require a sound card, in fact, it actually has its own sound card. So its basically an external sound card of its own.

With that being said, I now own two Bose Products. The Bose Companion 5 and Bose Triport Over-Ear Headphones. Both of them sounds amazing with the best quality you can get. In my opinion its worth every penny I spent on these speakers. If I were to buy a Home Theater System, I will not hesitate looking at Bose first. Chances are, its probably the only Brand I will rely on after owning a couple of their products.

So if you want a great and clear/best quality in sound especially in music, Bose is the brand you are looking for. But if you want a really loud and muddy sound then get something else.

Test it out first and find out for yourself. That way, you can experience what it sounds like. If you want to test your music out, just ask one of the representatives of whatever store you are looking at and I bet they will do it for you.

Hope that helps

Bose, for many many years has been the king of speakers. They have been the biggest seller by far. This past year they were past up by Klipsch, but still they have gotten the most attention not by being the best sounding but by being the best marketed. Having sold speakers for years I can tell you one thing. It doesn't matter if I think they are good or bad. All that matters is what you think. When I used to sell bose I could be sure that 1: the customer was going to keep them and 2: he was going to brag about them and show them off. All of this was good for me and even though I wasn't the biggest fan all that mattered was that my customer was happy. People who trusted notoriety more than their own ears could convince themselves that they heard more detail, more bass or something that gave them the reason to be happy with the Bose. That is fine, who am I to tell them that their taste is faulty. For all I know it is me who is faulty. All I could do was ask if they wanted to hear something else to get a sense of comparison. Sometimes they stuck with Bose and sometimes they chose something else.
Now, Bose has done somethings very well. For the person looking for an easy to connect, better than your average home theater in a box, I admit that the Lifestyle systems are good. You can buy better for the price, but it won't be as easy to use. Even if the Lifestyle isn't as upgradeable as one might want. Before Dolby Pro Logic II came out Bose' Stage 5 processing was very impressive surround processor.
Remember, at one time Bose was one of the best available, I just don't think that they have focussed on sound as much as they have convenience or style or other things, for better or worse.
Beside, Dr. Amar Bose seems to have abandoned audio research for automobile research anyway.

A sound engineer friend of mine once said: "Bose does more with a 4 inch tweeter than anybody, but there is a limit to what you can do with a 4-inch tweeter."

Bose gives you 1 oversize driver where regular speakers give you 2-3.

Regular speakers come in wood enclosures, Bose comes in plastic cubes.

Bose advertises in every issue of AARP magazine and puts commercials on the afternoon movies - targeting the elderly and retired. These are not people with good hearing.

Bose has setup stores and "Road Shows", but are careful to hide all the extra parametric equalizers, amplifiers, etc. that are involved in the demo. (A guy I know discovered the rack of equipment at one such demo and was escorted out of the store.)

Bose force stores to 'price protect' their products. Stores cannot put them on sale to be competitive. Keeping the price high helps create the impression that they are 'premium'.

Bose uses their lawyers to prevent any magazine from publishing test results of their speakers.

The speakers are OK quality, but the ethics of the company are questionable and I prefer not to reward these policies.

This article at the link pretty much sums it up.

Forget Bose unless you value high price and mediocrity ... there are many many better choices.

Bose is based on a flawed idea. No true audiophile would ever buy it or even have anything positive to say about it.
