Engine ticking noise when cold but quiets down when hot. Sometimes it may take up to 60 seconds before it starts making the noise after it is started. It has great oil pressure & the noise doesn't get worse when reved up & letting off the gas like a rod knocking, although when reved up the noise does speed up. I have removed the belt & ran it to make sure that the noise wasn't coming from something up front, the noise is still there. I had a mechanic I know from the local Chevy dealer look at it & he thinks it is in the bottom of the engine when he used his stethascope on it. He talked to a mechanic at the local Jeep dealer & the guys first response was to change the oild filter to a Mopar filter (it had a Fram on it). We both thought that was kind of stupid but for $5.00 we gave it a shot, to no surprise it didn't change anything. To me it sounds like a lifter / rocker but the guy from the Chevy dealer says when he listenes to it w/ his stethascope it is loudest in the bottom end.

My bet is the lifters as well. I would go get a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil, it comes in a red bottle. Add it to your gas as well as oil and even strait into the intake. Your exhaust will smoke a bit but it will stop after it burns off the MMO. This stuff does wonders on eating deposits and helped me when I had problems with my valves being gunk'ed up.

Is this new? Yes, lifter can do this...but many, but not all jeep four liters did have various degrees of piston slap and yes, it is most noticable during cold running. Not really a problem or danger.
Change the filter???..Uh...OK...
Try this, change to 30 weight motor oil...Now, if it is at or below freezing DON'T, but you can go to 10W-40 and see if it get's better.
To check for a lifter you will have to pull the valve cover..Not cheap or easy..MUCH easier on a Grand than Standard Cherokee
Good Luck

Sound like a 4.0 to me, just keep a ear on it, the engine is just broken it, almost all the 4.0l I've heard make a little tick tick at some point in there life. If its not to loud, keep up on oil changes and drive it. The 4.0l are good motors.

My 4.0 has 111k on it, and I've used only Mobil 1, synth, 5w30 oil in it!! And its still great! Cahnge your oil to a lighter "w", and that will help with cold sarts ups!! good luck

I bet its the lifters.

you can try flushing the oil a couple times with additives, but other than that i think you would have to replace them to fix it.
