we've ben together for nearly 9 years now, committed to each other but are unmarried. what would you suggest i call him when i'm referring to him?
he's neither a spouse nor a fiance.
boyfriend sounds too juvenile.
significant other sounds too old.
other half sounds like i'm hiding something.
life partner sound too lesbian-ish.

any thoughts or suggestions?

Man pet. Nine years I think it's time you just call him your husband and commit to something. If a state marriage just scares you because of all the legal issues just get married by the church. At least in God's eyes you would be married without the legal hassles just don't file with the state.

Usually a masculine term, plus a baked good is a winner. Some examples could include:

"Stud cupcake"

"Manly chimichanga"

"Angelfood adonis"

and so on. If nothing else, they will put a big grin on your face when describing your relationship to others, which is always good.

They never did come up with a good term for that, did they?Stupid,marriage-biased society[grumble grumble...].How 'bout "Soul Mate"?It sounds a little goofy to some people, but I,for one, would be thrilled to be called that by someone I love.

Sounds like you should introduce him as your Friend. The two of you are common law husband and wife. Kudos for not rushing into marriage. I'm not!!!

how about just introducing him by his name? you two seem committed and secure enough so does he really need a title?if he does I would just use " my boyfriend" or how about "my man" or "my boy toy"....
