I'd like to make an application to change the contents of a ".dat" database. Which kind of database is this? and If you know, which component of Visual Basic 6/2005 should I use to access it?

It's a generic data format, usually comma delimited. To be sure, check it out in notepad.

For some reason I am thinking that the original Lotus databases were .dat, but I could be wrong. That was over 20 years ago and I don't remember with any certainty.

As for the VB part of your question, you're on your own. I found my way out of the coding world before it was invented.

.dat usually stands for "data" and .dat files could be anything.
There is no well-known desktop database that uses that extension specifically.

DAT is a rather common file extension. It is short for data. It could be just a regular file. Take a peek with notepad or debug.
