I am a Muslim and with due respect, I would like to write my opinion.
The Quran says that nobody is to bear the weight of the mistakes of another. Each person should take the responsibilities of his/her actions and beliefs. For Muslims, Jesus (peace be upon him) is a Prophet who came to teach God's word to the Jews, and to return them to the path of virtues and spirituality. This was his mission and he did it very well.
"Dying for someone else's sins" won't change anything. Unfortunately there have been people who did big atrocities and claimed they were believers in Jesus and that he died for their sins.. so they were not worried about any punishment. Were they told that they are responsible for their actions in the eyes of God, and that neither Jesus nor anyone else will be responsible for their crimes, they would have thought 10 times before doing them.
Peace/salaam.

This being unanswerable since he did die, part of this question depends on your view of the incarnation and how did Christ die for our sins. I don't hold to the subistiuatry atonment view as it's a bunch of legalistic bruha. Christ was exicuted becuse our sinful nature was to reject him -hence the reason the Bible says every time we sin we crucify him.
So I in my view if Christ had not died it would ahve been becuse we colectivly recognised who he was, which would result in the world being very differant as we would be under God's government and thus in a utopia. Which we rejected in Eden, thus the reason he was crucified and took the dead with him and he will come back so we will have the utopia.

The answer to your question is found in the Bible.
But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.
But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. (1 Corinthians 15:12-21)

We would still be offering animal sacrifices for forgiveness of sins like in the Old Testament. If Jesus did not die for our sins, there would be no New Testament, so we would still be under the Mosaic law.

I need some time to get the verses together, but I will. In the most basic sense we would still be sacraficing animals to atone for our sin

We would have to pay for every sin we have ever committed and our punishment would be alot worse, the Lake of Fire comes to mind. We would not have eternal life with God

The same effect as that of the Old Testament. People died with their sins. When Jesus died for our sins, he died for everyone's; past, present, and future. So if he hadn't died, we would have died with sins and we would have to make it up...very painfully.
