No good.
Those that say they support the war in iraq should step up and enlist.

I don't think it would be good, and I'm a Vietnam Veteran who spent almost 10 years in the Army.
However, I think it would be great if there were two years of some form of "service" (Army, Peace Corps, Forestry Service, etc) that everyone had to do at the end of High School.
Even the smartest people I have known would have done well to have some "life education" between high school and college.
Back in the days of the Great Depression (early 1930's) there was an outfit called the CCC--Civilian Conservation Corps.
It was a way for the government to employ people without jobs and also have work done for the government.
Many of our national parks were made possible by CCC workers who did things like build roads and dams and buildings for public use.

It would give everyone a sense of entitlement to veterans benefits and move us closer to socialism.
I have made the choice to be in the military I would not want to make that choice for anyone else with a draft or mandatory service.
When the military needs more people we will increase compensation to be more competitive just like a private business would. Currently we are making mission on recruiting and retention.

Having served in the U.S. military, I will say that going through the basic training was one of the 3 best things that has happened to me. For the person who has not gone through it, it is very difficult to understand.
It is not just an issue of "getting hollered at by a drill sargeant" but a methodology of tearing down the walls that we build around ourselves and teaching us to work together as a team. You learn to depend on others, as well as how important it is that others are able to depend on you.
I wish that I could convey what I and many others have gained from this experience so that you could understand. Perhaps someone who is more gifted with explanation will answer you as well...
I would be a proponent to having some sort of service that would provide this type of training, but not necessarily having it be "military" specific. I also do believe that it is not something that EVERYONE would gain from, but I think that most would complete it an improved person.
It has nothing to do with the war in Iraq, Afghanistan or wanting a draft. I don't want a draft, nor will I spill my political view on this, but simply answering the question, mandating military service would not be a positive experience for everyone, but mandating some kind of service as a requirement may be a more realistic and positive benefit.

so which you assert reinstate the draft. My guess is you're too old or no longer worth. I did 4 years provider interior the USCG and yet another sixteen interior the USCG Reserve (1983-2003). I retired a Petty Officer 1st classification (E-6). I easily have my basic coaching Honor Graduate Ribbon, besides others, with the aid of fact I graduated interior the perfect 3% easily. i'm a liberal and a patriot. I easily have prevailed in try against extra effective than as quickly as. you would be fortunate to be interior the backside 3%, no longer to show finished your coaching. You sicken vets with this horse crap.

how would it not be a good thing to have every one serve?
you learn to tolerate overbearing leadership.
it would teach you to think in extreme times
the country would be in better shape physically
respect for others( the world could use a lot more)
everyone will feel apart of the action.
fight harder to stay away from conflict.
the way the people stood together in the wars with drafts is so different than now (Nam changed every thing)
so if we work as a country
play as a country
we will want to defend out country

You have a serious misimpression about the military.
You think boot camp is all about getting yelled at? Boot camp reduces the differences between different people and makes them one thing; useful.
You learn responsibility, discipline, and how to take orders. You also learn to pay attention to details and be part of a team.
If you serve long enough then you start giving orders and you can't give them without learning to take them.
Look at Iraq, one embedded reported was warned by his colleagues in NYC to listen to the old man in charge of the platoon. The "old man" was 25 years old! Tell me where in the civilian world can such responsibility be given to someone so young and the job done so well. I'd hire a veteran any day of the week over a college grad.
As for verbal abuse, I found it to be quite rare but like the civilian world sometimes a** holes slip through.

it would force all the people who take their lives and liberties for granted to see the world through a much more true point of view. if you think the military is just all about yelling, you have been talking to the wrong people and/or watching too many movies. dont you worry though, that will never happen, so enjoy your life as it is and never think about it again. we have a true volunteer military and dont need anyone who dosnt want to be a part of it.

The way I see it, everyone who chooses to live in America should want to be in the US military. Until that happens, however, I'll settle for belonging to the small portion of the nation's population that is better than the rest.

How about helping each and every person in this country to understand just how great it is here. It will help them realize that serving your country for 2 years mandatory, will help them appreciate every freedom we enjoy.

makes you tougher, stronger, more respectful, and you serve your country. Also strong discipline is what some people need to get them to wake up and become better ppl.
But I think if you don't want to serve then you shouldn't because then you have 1. don't want to be there 2. More likely you'll desert 3. Your not fighting w/t pride, honor,or bravery. 4. Why do something you dont believe in.
