You can petition him for the green card. File the forms I-130 Petition Alien Relative, I-485 Register to Permanent Residence or Adjustment of Status, G-325 Biographic Information, I-693 Medical Examination of Alien Seeking Adjustment of Status, I-134 Affidavit, I-765 Employment Authorization, I-131 Advanced Parole (Travel Document) with all required filing fees and accompanying documents. The filing fees are not cheap, though. I-130 is $355, I-485 & I-765 & I-131 & I-134 & Biometric is $1,010. For I-485, he needs to get all required vacinations and medical examination by USCIS appointed doctor, which costs additiona.
With the approval of I-131 he can enter US and with the approval of I-765 he will get EAD Card to allow him work in US until the approval of I-485 decision.
It used to take about 6 months until to get the I-485 interview date, but these days there is huge backlog in the processing due to unprecedented number of applications before the fee went up enormously in last July. These days, nobody knows how long it would take on any of Immigration process.
You can get all the forms and filing instructions at USCitizenship and Immigration Service website. Good luck!

I wish you the best. You do not have a problem, he has a problem coming to the USA. I do not think he has a problem coming here as a student or as a tourist. Remember, you simply want to get him here. It is much easier to apply for things once you are here. I would try to get him here as a tourist if nothing else then process once I am here. You might be trying to do too much while in Ethiopia. I love Ethiopians; they are my favorite Africans.
Good luck with your endeavors.

After he serves his time for his robbery charge, he will be deported. Marriage will not change that, neither will having a child. All criminal say they are innocent. An illegal alien cannot get legal status without first returning to their own country and waiting out the 10 year ban they will receive. His criminal charge will make him ineligible to ever gain legal status. Better pack up and move with him. He knew he was illegal when he was 16, so that excuse is a total lie.

In Australia we apply for a spousal visa. I am sure America would have something similar. My friend married a Nigerian who she met here in Australia, but because he was here on a working visa he had to go back home and reapply for the spousal visa. they were told it could take up to 2 years for him to be allowed back in Australia for good. He was back in 9 months.

He can go now on holiday, but I think you'll find its a bit of toughie to stay for any length of time. Just cos your married doesn't necessarily mean he'll be allowed to stay indefinitely, and they're not known for doing anything particularly fast.

You may find an answer in there somewhere. I think you are able to come back anytime or that is the way it should be regardless of gender or place of marriage.

Contact the US embassy. Or, even better, talk to a lawyer. They will know the best way to get you where you want to be.

You would have a better chance on a fiance visa. If you marry first it will be more difficult.
