I had a playstation 2(the bulky one) and it lasted for about 5 years and then it just stopped reading the discs. Its pretty much useless now. Will this same thing happen with the ps3 cause i really hope not due to its $499 price tag.

1). 5 years is a good life span for PS2.
2). Replace laser - a lot of places will do it ant it will work a bit longer.
3). Provide a good air flow around PS3.
4). Cover it with a cloth, when not in use - protects from a dust.
6). Don't insert dusty or dirty CDs.

First try this if it does not work try doing my way of fixing it This is what the PlayStation Forum says: 1. Turn off Playstation®3. 2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again. 3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps 4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button. 5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button 6. The Recovery menu will pop up. The current Recovery Menu supports: • Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System. • Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default. • Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files. • Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3. • Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch. • System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System MY WAY Sign in Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option) go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as well as cookies check the disc if it has fingerprints or scratches if it does then thats your problem if you have the 60GB sos mate they have alot of problems or maybe try this put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it then switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it then put it back on then the fan test should be working this may cool it down it may be overheating if this problem still continues go out and buy a inter cooler from a shop if it STILL CARRIES ON phone up sony

No! The PS2 got the disc read error because of an inherent flaw in the design of the system. The PS3 does not have this flaw and is much more reliable than the PS2 (or the 360 for that matter). Failure rates for the PS3 are below 4%.

I've had my big PS2 for about the same amount of time as you and it still runs fine. The PS2 was probably built to last for a certain amount of time before it needed to be repaired or needed a tune-up.

The PS3 will last for a long time, and if my PS3 ever stops reading discs in 7 or 8 years from now, I'll send it in to Sony so they can give it a tune up or do whatever. Every electronic device doesn't last forever. Eventually some parts in some devices will have to be replaced. Even HDTV's have a life span on them.

it depends on how well you take care of your system. some people really abuse theres and probably won't even last a year. but since your asking if a ps3 would last at least 5 years, id say that maybe w/in that much time sony would have already made another new system by then.

You can clean the laser, instead of replacing the entire unit...but it'll take a while for that to happen to the PS3 if you take care of it and the discs.

I have had my ps2 since launch and it's works like when I first got it because every now and then i clean the laser and blow out all the dust with canned(compressed)air you just have to know how to break down and put together the ps2 properly.

There are plany places on the net that show step-by-step on "how-to"
