Taxgurl is correct. The W-4 does not have to be accurate.

Your sister will fill out a W-4 with the employer, and it is not important to be correct and accurate because your sister's status (marriage, kids, etc.) could change many ways during the course of employ.

The W-2 has to be accurate. It is the employers statement of your sister's earned wages for the year.

She does not need to tell the employer if she doesn't want to. However, she runs the risk of having the wrong amount withheld from her paychecks which could lead to a big tax bill in the spring.

The info on the W-4 on file with the employer does not have to match the filing status.....they don't check them against each other. The W-4 just tells the employer how much tax to withhold.

No, she can claim single on her W-4 with her employer if she wants to, then still file her actual return as married. The employer doesn't see the actual return.

The key date and question is "Dec 31st" and What is your martial status when you file your income taxes. So since your sister is married she has two choices when filing her taxes. It is either "Married Filing Separately" which is the least desirable filing status to use or "Maried Filing Jointly".

No. You can file any way you wnat. Your employer has NOTHING to do with how you file your taxes.

You can claim anything you want on your employer W2. That simply affects how much is withheld. How much you actualy owe is calculated when you do your taxes.

No, when she filles out her W4, she can fill it out however she wants. If she selects Single then usually more federal income taxes will be taken out of her check.
