I'm a veteran of the U.S Coast Guard. I spent 10 years in. For the person who said that the Coast Guard does not leave the U.S you are wrong. The Coast Guard is in Iraq right now. During war time we fall under the Department of Defense. We assist the Navy. We have been involved in every war since the American Revolution.

We do search and rescue, Maritime Law Enforcement and Alien Integration.
You do get the same job skills as you would in the Navy. The difference is that the Coast Guard is smaller than the Navy. We also have the right to stop vessels and search them as the Navy does not. The Coast Guard is about 40,000 strong. The New York City police Department is bigger than the Coast Guard. You can volunter to go but if you are at a Law Enforcement Detachment team or a MOL unit or any other deployable unit you can go overseas without voluntering.

First of all you have to realize if you join any of the military branches you will not get to choose where you will be stationed. Don't listen to recruiters either. They are sales people and they will use slick words to get you to sign the bottom line. I man in my Coast Guard boot camp company got fooled this way. His recruiter "guaranteed" him area of choice. This guy thought he was getting stationed back home in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately the poor sap did get AREA of choice, The Atlantic AREA which could be any ship or station from the State of Maine to Puerto Rico and including the Gulf States. The difference between the Coast Guard and the Navy. As mentioned the Coast Guard is in the Department of Homeland Security and the Navy is under the Department of the Navy which is under the Department of Defense. The Navy, just like the Army, Air Force and Marines number one mission is national defense. The Coast Guard is also under the mission of national defense but it's number one priority mission is Search and Rescue. Maritime Law Enforcement is second. The Coast Guard also is responsible for Aids to Navigation. The Coast Guard is the smallest of the Armed Services both in personell and budget but has a vast number of responsibilities. The US Coast Guard does operate world wide service with it's polar ice breakers and on special assignment but the Coast Guard mainly operates in the coastal, river and lake regions of the United States and in the Caribbean since that region includes Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and is also a major lane of illegal drug traffiking. The Navy on the other hand operates worldwide, sailing the four oceans frequently and on a regular basis.

The Coast Guard patrols territorial U.S waters. They do customs and law enforcement, drug and smuggling arrests. They do rescue operations. The Coast Guard has moved from one department to another. Currently, I believe they are under Homeland Security. They don't deploy out of U.S waters.
The Navy is in the Department of Defense. They transport Marines, sail around the world. They deliver men and material to any place on the globe where we have troops. They are a symbol of a nations power.
Both are voluntary. Many jobs are the same in each, also they each have many jobs that are different..

We in the Navy used to refer to our Coast Guard brothers (lovingly, I might add) as our "little brown water brothers". In all actuality, the Coast Guard has had a very honored and distinguished past in both combat and non-combat operations. Due to the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 forbids the use of the U.S Military as a "posse" to enforce civilian law. The U.S. Navy, for example, cannot be conscripted to do drug interdiction in U.S. Territorial waters. This is one of the Coast Guards chief peacetime responsibilities is the enforcement of law on the high seas within U.S. Territorial waters. They also respond to all distress calls, regardless of the weather conditions. The bravery and dedication of the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard is surpassed only by their professionalism. Semper Paratis (Always Ready) is their core belief and they demonstrate it time after time after time without fanfare or glorification. The last time the U.S. Coast Guard operated under the authority of the U.S. Navy was during World War II when they sustained heavy casualties during operations in both theaters of operations. To be absolutely fair, the United States Coast Guard was established PRIOR to the United States Navy, actually making the Navy the little brother of the Coast Guard, right?

You must be six foot tall to be a Coastie... so that when your boat sinks, you can wade to shore. :-)

The United States Coast Guard is everywhere the action is : they provide both brownwater patrol [rivers] and deep water anti pirate activity throughout the world.

yes, the CG deploys to Iraq. the main difference is the CG is responsible for maritime law enforcement and rescue. drug smugglers, people smugglers and the like. in fact, US Naval vessels on deployment will sometimes carry a CG Det on Board, as they are the ones allowed to Board vessels.
