I have Canon 35mm SLR (EOS Elan II) and I use Sunpak PowerZoom 4000AF flash with it. I am planning to upgrade to DSLR (probably Rebel XTi). Would I be able to use the same Sunpak flash with DSLR?

Since both cameras have E-TTL flash metering the Sunpak should work. However, to be safe, you need to check the trigger voltage for the flash and see what it is for the XTi. If the trigger voltage is too high you could damage your new camera.

IMO you should consider selling the Sunpak and buying the flash offered by Canon for your XTi.

Hard to say. The flash won't break. However the camera might, if not the first time then upon repeated usage. It depends on the trigger voltage. Unfortunately canon stopped making handlemount flashes for their eos system (or maybe it's only sold through their professional services, I don't know), but if your goal is to use a handlemount flash, Metz makes good ones that are compatible with eos. I think Wein makes some sort of adapter that acts as a buffer between old flashes and autofocus cameras. Also, if your camera has a PC terminal, those can handle higher voltage than the hot shoe.
