No harm. I read it to them often.

We read Mark 1-4 last weekend. My 7 yo went online and continued to read at http://www.thebricktestament.com for the next 3 hours. We also watched Jesus Christ Superstar (the remake) very recently. Now my 10 yo has the soundtrack on her mp3 player.

I'm not an atheist, but the bible is pretty inappropriate for children. It is violent, gory sexually explicit. There are things in there that would make a sailor blush if not just vomit. And while I think it is a pretty good historical record, I don't think it can be counted as one hundred percent accurate. There are parts of the bible that kids just should not read until they are old enough to handle that sort of thing. And People who read it ought to be able to separate fact from fiction. Believing every word is just as foolish as disbelieving every word.

I'd rather they read a more well written , coherent and moral fairytale than the bible ;)

I would very seriously doubt it many (any) atheists actively stopped their children from reading any religious books.

We leave suppression up to the theists

A little too NC-17 for a fairy tale.

As far as my future kids learning about other religions goes, I'm going to encourage it. The bible, however, is not suitable for children (as so many have stated above).

Well, the last thing you want to be is afraid, and inflict fear, for God's sake!Only if you could explain to them it's make believe, and change the R rated parts,to G rated, hard to do!

I remember being scared as a kid because my dad read me the part in the Bible where Samson's eyes were gouged out by his enemies.

Sometimes it's too violent to read when young.

It's violent, poorly-written, features a god and all of his followers killing people and not getting punished but being referred to as protagonists instead etc. It's a hateful little book, really.

"I JUST LOVE WHEN ATHEIST SHOW THEIR TRUE COLORS."
How do we do that? By not genuflecting in front of your ancient script seven times a day?

No harm whatsoever. I encourage parents to read the bible to their children every night. (Just don't skip over the good parts.)

It's not exactly a fairy tale. It's a story of mankind and all our descent into misery. It's sexually explicit, it's violent, it's full of injustice, and yes, it is contradictory. And it carries a promise. There's the redeeming part of it. The promise.
