I'm Scottish, and I don't hate English people at all (I'll be marrying one soon) but if an English person were to be so nasty to the Scottish, 99% of the time I would stand up for my country, just as much as they would stand up for their's. Why all the hatred and arguing? Where did it all come from? Do you hate people because they're Scottish/English or is it just the nation as a whole?

its funny, I had a discussion about this with some one today.

I dont have anything against the English - but the English tend to carry great grudges against the scottish. The other day I met a girl from London - she was talking to me very well but as soon as I mentioned I was scottish she was like , "oh ok.." and acted differently with me since then. Its quite pathetic that some still have these grudges.

Just reading some of the comments here you have got, some one said that scottish people are angry people?! I completely disagree.. and does that person know every single scottish person? its awful.

Also, someone said something about the accent? Everywhere in scotland is different for an accent. Im from Aberdeen - I have a completely different accent to someone from say, Glasgow..To say "I dont mind the Scottish but i dislike the accent" - its shows complete ignorance.

I was on a forum about Billy Connolly the other day (amazing comedian) and the amount of arguments between the scottish and the English was crazy. English people were saying "scotland is not independant! they live off the english tax payers" etc etc, it was awful...

Im living abroad right now and the first thing someone says to me when they find out im Scottish is, "really? I can understnad you though! I cant usually understand the scottish accent".. and that can get annoying!
and many times ive been asked "your english, your from England?" and I say - "im from the UK yes..but im from Scotland not England!" its as if Scotland isnt part of the uk or something!

I dunno, I dont think the "feud" between the Scottish and English will ever stop.

From most of the comments here, it appears to be Scottish people saying they have no issue and English saying we are an easy target. Now to make yourself a target you have to be visible and let's have a look.

Tourism, Cultures in other countries have to be of English orientation or they crack up, I'll give you an example went to mainland Spain girl behind bar did not speak English, English lad verbally abused her screaming like it was his right saying she should speak English, whereas most of the other nations will try and research a little. English are very much disliked in Spain, I went to Valencia and asked for direction only to be spat at and be called dirty Inglaterra, I confirmed I was not English but Scottish and got an apology. Also many European countries can speak English but vice versa they English feel they don't need too.

How that you are treated depends on how you tread the people that you visit AND a lot of rotten apples gives a whole people a bad reputation.

Racism, homophobia, England is a very backwards society at times although of recent some of the youth are changing that.

I really am beginning to understand that England is a bully and tries to run Ireland and Scotland and for that I am very sad. My father was Irish and he wasn't a nice man at all and I kind of hated having any of his blood. But every time I hear someone from Ireland speak it softens my heart and just completely entrances me, it's so beautiful as is the country itself. And after watching Braveheart and reading about the real William Wallace I can understand their problem with England also. And I can understand every single word spoken by the Irish and the Scottish and I think it is truly beautiful as are the people from there.

I'm English but through work I spend a lot of time in Scotland. I don't think about Scottish People being any different to me but I can definately see a divide. The BBC make Scots watch England Footie matches, watch English TV and listen to all the English news too. I do think that the high up English Politicians and the like do feel that England is better but the majority of us see us all as one.

i'm not sure with regard to the English, yet easily each and all the Scottish pals I easily have had over the years all choose England to lose at interest truly soccer. i'm English and am continually satisfied while Scotland do nicely in issues, so i do no longer understand why they are no longer the comparable. absolutely everyone who takes the action picture Braveheart with that nicely wide-unfold Scottish actor Mel Gibson! as having a shred of fact needs to bypass returned to college. And the different individual who suggested approximately Scots hating the British, you're British you nitwit, you are able to have suggested English, there's a distinction.

I am Scottish (can you tell?) Personally, I do not hate English people apart from in a Footballing sense in which from the top all the way down, they are arrogant , full of pish and can't see the fog for the mist in terms of how poor and over-rated English football is as a whole.
Obviously, in History there are many reasons for these countries to have a dislike for each other but I am certainly no expert on it so can't really comment .

I'm English and have had Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Jewish, Dutch, German, French, Italian, American, Spanish etc friends and ''Friends.''

I don't recall ever having 'hated' any Scotsmen nor been the hate of one either!! So I don't know about any of it. I do, on the other hand, know of a certain 'antagonism' between the English & the Scotts, just as there is an ancient one between the French and the English, and the Welsh and the English ~ though nothing of the 'National Hatred ' you seem to know of.

I've known some really nice Scottish men and some fabulously lovely Scottish women too....... But as for 'hate'....!

Sash.

I myself I am bit dodgy near scots, not that I hate scots but everytime I think of scotland I think of the SNP, the reasson its more common now is because of the refrendum, though the wankers we have in parliament fought scottish nationalism with english nationalism which you know pissed off the english. but as there is a few anti scotts in england, there is cerently (small but still there) group of people who hate the English. and it maybe England always feels well differen't to the rest of the United kingdom, due to its roots, I am not too sure really.

Having read all the other answers, it would appear to me that both sides arguments are coloured by films and tv (legends too of course) rather than by fact,
The truth of the matter is both countries are interdependent, friendly rivalry is fine, but it is noticeable how we cling together, in the armed forces and as expatriates. This so called hate has only become noticeable in recent years, probably due to the nationalists, and journalism
