In 97 there were 3 tire opts for the Wrangler. A 30x9.50 was the largest of the 3. Go with the 30s. You should be fine for a street use Jeep. If you want a more agressive look I'd choose the BFG ATs. Great tire 40K+ miles easy.
31s will look stuffed inside the wheel wells. What size is on the Jeep now? Which motor and trans do you have? Just curious.

I had 31's on mine no problem no rub just gave up a lil turn radius if you adjust that screw on the axel near the u joints there wont be any problem with the rub. Was designed to be able to fit 31's out of factory.

You don't say what kind of Jeep.
There lies the problem with answering this question.
31's will fit a Wrangler stock, but they won't fit a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee without serious rubbing.

31's will fit without a lift, But the will rub on the inner fenderwells on a hard turn.

if you wanna put 31s on it just get some used rubicon springs for like 100 bucks and itll give you bout a 1 inch lift...

You gotta lift it,Dude.
Otherwise,front inner wheel well rubbing will substantially decrease your turning radius.
