Your mom sounds wise....I did a study on that in college. Read "Cold Sassy Tree" it discusses about suicide in it. Depends on who you talk to what answer you will get. Some feel that you go to Hell because you rejected God, but others like your mom state that one is not in there right mind when they do something like that. There was not a lot of knowledge in the past on mental illness like today. I believe your mom....I am sorry for the loss...

I think it is up to you, if you are religious then you believe that God is merciful and forgiving. I assume you are religious or you would have not asked the question. Sometimes people can not cope with depression or mental problems and they do things that someone without these problems wouldn't do. I don't believe they will be punished by God, or whoever you believe in, as they have punished and tortured their selves long before they commit the act of suicide. I would like to think they find peace. Sorry you have having to go through this, I know how tough suicide is to deal with.

This should be in Religion and Spirituality rather than mental health. I am going to answer it like it was a mental problem. I don't think there is a literal Hell with fire and brimstone. But I do believe in hell. If you are seriously contemplating suicide you already are in hell. Hell to me is only an attitude or negative state of mind. If you go through with the act of suicide then that is the most selfish act a person can commit other than taking another's life.

Why is it selfish? Because by doing it you have announced to the world and God that nothing in it or any ones positive opinion about an alternative is true or worth any thing; all is negative and life is not worth living. You cut yourself off from anyone or anything to choose an eternity of nothing ness. But most people who commit suicide don't believe at the end that that is final they have some idea of an existence in the hereafter but they have no proof. They may and proably are wrong.

No one has ever come back after dying to tell what is in that existence, if anything. You say Christ came back. Christ for all practical purposes was a suicide. (suicide by cop) He is said to have changed water into wine and a few fishes and loaves into a feast for hundreds so he had (or thought he had) magical powers which he could have used to save his life. he also believed he was the son of God if not God. He refused to or couldn't use such almighty powers to save himself so he committed suicide in reality. He definitely was mentally in hell because he was saying at the end "My God My God why hast thou forsaken me?" So why would he if he in truth is that God, condemn a suicide?

Suicides condemn themselves. They are in hell before the act and being there have admitted they have no power to maintain or recover their existence. If there is any existence after death then they are mentally impoverished by negativity for a means to use their mingds to exist there They go into that existence negative about life. You say that "something inside a suicide switches off"; yes the positive view (love) of life switches off and the negative view of nothingnes switches on.

Those who contemplate suicide and commit it are sick people and they need all the sympathy and help we can muster for them.

I am sorry for Sean and others who can't find help, good mental health, peace and Love!.

iam bipolar, with a list of other serious health problems. right now iam in a serious depression. i have thought about suicide just today, i believe i will go to hell if i go through with it. that is the # 1 reason iam here now. i think i cannot take it anymore sometimes on a daily basis. but if i killed myself how could i ask for forgiveness after the fact. you do not have to be mentally ill to have a breakdown either.

My wife and I believe that he`ll have to come back and live this life again. We believe we write our own destiny before we even get here.We are born,we learn what we came here to learn, then we go home. That is how we can explain how it is that a small child can be so much wiser than a very old person. When we have learned all there is to know,we become Angles.

I do not believe that those who commit suicide go to hell. Sin is sin and everyone commits sin. Everyone breaks the 10 Commandments every once in awhile....who hasn't lied in their life or been envious of someone or something? One sin is no better than another, therefore murdering someone is no better or worse than lying. God forgives ALL sins. We're judged by what we've done in our lives, but we're saved by the grace of God.

Heaven or hell is up to the beliefs of the person,
and not up to why he died or where he died.

Having read and studied the New Testament part of the Bible,
(read John 3:16) Eternal life in heaven comes about for the person who BELIEVES that Jesus Christ died to pay for the sins you have done because God loves you.

In my theology training,my answer to you would be no, a suicide does not send you to hell. Think about it a bit and you may realize that he was already in his hell. He is on the other side resolving his issues, healing and learning. If you believe in reincarnation, he already experienced his hell here on this earth plane. He is at peace now. God is Love, healing, and we reach a higher spirit place as we go through our many lives we live. I have a favorite saying; " When we reach the other side, ALL religious beliefs are going to be wrong in some areas of doctrine, no one man created theology or "religion" has all the correctanswers. Your relationship to God is between you and your God as you know him....A lot of souls will be very surprised when they get to face their God and find, no one was completely right. It comes down to, no, I donot believe he is in hell, he is with God, healing and learning the lessons he came here to learn. He will come to you if you call him, talk to him, ask for validation that he hears you and you will get it. Just ask in faith and pure belief. The best signs I have found to ask for is a sign from them that is familar to you and unmistakable, such as, suddenly you see his name associated with certain mundane things around you. My late husband, when he is around meorlistening tome talk to him will repeatedly have his first or last name show up in strange unexpected ways, like maybe the bank tellers last name or first name is the same and you notice, then you see the same day or a day later his middle or last name. I walked into the bank just thispast week with aproblem I had talked in spirit with Philip about. On her desk was paper work that the persons name was Philip, and guess what, her last name was Wilson, his last name. Then on TV, I noticed the same day, the name Wilson showed up in several credits of shows I was watching. I knew then, he had heard me, helped me and the problem at the bank was solved very easily when I figured it was going to be an ordeal for months to resolve. It only took that one day. They are with us, as well as with God. Do not fret. He is fine, happy now and watching over you. These things have happened over and over for me, not just once. Please know this. He will meet you when you cross over. Trust he will be smiling when he does. Blessings to you and yours.

The Bible mentions several instances of suicide, but does not give any specific laws about it. However, there are several passages that indicate life is given by God and only God has the right to take it away. For example:

"I came naked from my mother's womb," he said, "and I shall have nothing when I die. The Lord gave me everything I had, and they were his to take away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Suicide is not mentioned in the Bible. Anybody who interprets it as being a sin is going to Hell because misinterpretation of the Bible is a sin.
