My MIL is not too bad, but given the choice to "take her or leave her" I would definitely "leave her" ha ha! What is your horror story and how did you cope (or did you???)!!!

When I met my husband, his parents were divorced. I liked his dad immediately, he was warm and welcoming, and a really nice person. His mother came out after we were married and I could feel the hostility as soon as I walked in the door. We had gone there for dinner. She had fixed some sort of horrid cornbread thing, with giant chunks of onion with the root end included on, and other veggies floating around in this cornmeal mess.

I asked quite innocently, " Oh my, what an interesting dish, what is this called?" And she said, "Haven't you ever heard of "dressing"??"

Well, my family always stuffed a turkey with a corn bread, wild rice, chestnut and mushroom dressing, but that was NOT what her wretched dish was!!

One month later, the old bag was back in town, and I invited them for Thanksgiving, and I served the best damned Thanksgiving I'll bet she ever tasted. Everything was homemade from the cranberry relish to the pumpkin and mincemeat pies. Of COURSE I made the family cornbread, wildrice, chestnut and mushroom dressing that has been famous in my family for many generations.

At the end of the meal, she said absolutely NOTHING. My father-in-law was asking for seconds and thirds on the pies and I was wrapping up stuff for him to take home and I enjoyed cooking for him because he really enjoyed it, but the old bag? As my dear grandmother would have said, "I was feeding strawberries to donkeys".

Thank GOD I never saw my mother-in-law after that day. She went back east to her home. That was 46 years ago.

Oh, and later on? We had two daughters. Our first daughter was her first grandchild, she sent a card and two little outfits both the same but different colors. After that, even though we'd call, send birthday cards, presents, etc, no presents or cards for our girls, no nothing. Finally my husband said he didn't need that, neither did our girls. My folks were really close with us and they loved my husband like their own son.
I feel sorry for my MIL, she missed out on such love and such wonderful family.

Horrible Mother In Law

My mother in law is very smug and self righteous and the incident that I'll never forget is when I took my mom and MIL out to lunch for Mother's day about 3 months after my dad passed away. My MIL started telling my mom that she was so glad HER husband wasn't dead and she wouldn't know what to do if she lost him...etc etc until my mother was in tears. It was a really great lunch.

When my husband told my mother-in-law that we were thinking about getting married, her response was "Why by the cow when your getting the milk for free?" I was absolutely mortified. More than 10 years later, I still tell that story. So I guess I'm still coping.

my mother in law is just a *****, when i meet my husband 21yrs ago she tried to break us up all the time, nothing has change there. i can count on one hand how many time she has had my kids, even they don't like her that much, because of how she treats me. but there no love lost there any way. but my husband has not much to do with her because of what she like, and that is sad because my family is real close and he get on better with my family than his on.

My mother in law treated me like her daughter and treated my ex like she really loved him. She's been dead now for 17years, and our lives were never the same. Only the good die young, and my black hearted ex father in law is still breathing at 90+. D*mn shame.

My ex mother in law backstabbed me: sweet as pie to my face, she was undermining me behind my back. My ex didn't have the guts to make them butt out of our lives. Result: we separated when our little boy was 3.

Then he moved in with the woman he'd been seeing, to whom his family had lied, telling her he'd already broken up with me before they met. [She and I ended up being friends LOL!] Then they backstabbed her when he got onto woman number 3.... Needless to say, I avoid them now. They ring my son but I don't visit them.
