The ones used most often are called "nurses."
The one you're thinking about is a cardiac monitor, but it doesn't work exactly like that. Most people don't go straight from a normal sinus rhythm straight into asystole, and often enough the flat line turns out to mean the patient's taken off the wires to go to the bathroom, usually despite being restricted from doing so.

Patients in serious condition have Electrocardial leads atrtached to their skin in various areas around the heart. They pass the hearts electrical activity to a televsion monitor. This shows how the electrical activity in the heart is functioning. Once electrical activity in the heart stops, the patient cannot live. Heroic measures such as defibrillators(which send a current of electricity through the heart) can sometimes work

heart monitor, EKG
Sometime they use the brain wave of a EEG, when the body is kept alive by artifical respiration. But, a person can be 'brain dead', and still come out of a coma months or years later. That I why I would not want any loved one checking on a donation card, organ transplants are a big business. They want to harvest organs while your still alive.

I believe you are looking for the ECG (ELECTROCARDIOGRAM) Monitor, or the Cardiac or Heart Monitor.
The lines you see are the ECG tracings reflects the heart activities. A FLAT LINE could mean a patient had a cardiac arrest (heart stopped) but it does not necessarily mean the person attached to it is DEAD but could die if not resuscitated.
Sometimes, the ECG LEADS connecting to the person are DISPLACED or removed-that can also be a cause of FLATLINE seen in the monitor.

It's not an EKG, it's an ECG as it stands for electroencephelogram (could be spelled wrong, it is 4am after all).
