Maker's Mark themselves recommend mixing it with Berentzen's Apple Liqueur to make an "Apple Manhattan." I have mixed feelings about this drink -- Berentzen's tastes roughly like apple juice, so the result is a ways off the beaten path. Of course you can always make a regular Manhattan with sweet vermouth, and bourbons pair well with ginger ale as well.

In all fairness, you might want to give it a try without adding diet coke or coke. That is, if you don't usually drink whisky, then you probably shouldn't start by mixing it with other things, since then it would be hard to get a feel for what the whisky itself tastes like. I'd suggest starting out (or, if not with this, in the future) trying a whisky over ice, not mixed with anything. Te ice will cool it, and add water to it which will dilute the flavor slightly, but you'll still be able to discern what the whisky tastes like. Also, you say you didn't like it and that you don't think you'll be trying whiskey again, but keep in mind that there are many different kinds of whiskey that taste considerably different from each other. Maker's Mark is a bourbon, but not liking it doesn't mean you'll necessarily dislike all bourbons, and even if you do dislike all bourbons, that doesn't mean you'd necessarily dislike Irish whiskey, or rye whiskey, or any of the many other types of whiskey that exist.

Makers Mark is a sweet Bourbon. I would just use water as the mix. Its a great bourbon, if you ever have the chance go to the Makers Mark Distillery in Kentucky. They offer a wonderful tour of the whole bourbon making process and their distillery is just beautiful.

I make Manhattans out of it which is sweet vermouth, a dash of bitters, and a maraschino cherry with maybe a splash of the juice.
