Photography is an art for the same reason modern art is art. Its the process the effort and the thought thats put into it. Photography may not be as time consuming as other media, but all the elements of art are present. What differentaits a photo from a snapshot is first the art elements(i.e. rule of thirds, composition, lighting, line, shape, form, ect. that all would be present in a drawing or painting). Then secondly the meaning that is behind the photograph, which is also present in other art mediums. Fine art photographs are supposed to be worth a thousand questions not a thousand words. Granted, a photograph can make a statement, but along with that statement should come the question why. Photography is mostly considered an art form because it is ment to give a completely different perspective on the way our world is portrayed. I could go on about this forever......

Ask yourself why a pile of rocks assembled by a landscape gardener is art. Take a look at a 'zen garden' and see the art contained.
Art is any human 'construction' that appeals to the eye or to the senses - preferably both.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but those words aren't necessarily truthful. Just like someone's words can be taken out of context to change the meaning, a picture with no context has ambiguous meaning. Also, by changing lighting and getting extreme with the exposure time ofo a picture anything can seem very different from how it really looks in person. Therefore...

If you think about the definition of art, you might say, something that is pleasing to the eye, something that is beautiful, something that takes talent to produce, or, showing or evoking emotion. Art is dealing with the way that things come to gether.

Webster's definition says "1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. "


Photography is an art because it takes a special eye for composition, lighting, and background.

Think about drawing. If you are drawing, say, a face, you can change the expression your subject by a slight change in the way you draws the eye, the mouth, any part of the face. You can shade darkly, use a thick, soft pencil to create heavy lines, and use the positioning of the face to entirely change the mood to dark , deep, disturbed, or sad.

In writing, the author uses words and imagery described through words to create their mood and style. Using dark words and imagery creates a picture of despair.

In music, the artist uses deep and flat/sharp chords to create a mood. The lyrics go along with the writing as I said above. You get the picture. No pun intended, that is my point. Creating an image or images with words, lines, sounds, colors, and the like.
You can do exactly the same thing with photography. You can change the background to be a fittingly dark place, you can change the lighting/exposure to create shadows and light spots on the subject. You can change the subjects position to convey the emotion (in this case we are speaking of sadness and darkness).

Of course, this works for any emotion/mood. You obviously don't have to stick with the dark and depressing.

It's not easy to be a photographer, or take pictures that are really good, showing what you are trying to convey, and setting it up how you want.

If you take my earlier statement, that art is way that things come together to create something beautiful or emotion evoking, you can see that is applies to photography in the same way that it applies to painting, drawing, writing, and any others you can come up with.

Because there is a difference between a picture and a photograph. Anyone can learn to operate a camera. The art comes in when you start cheating the camera. You select a non-standard exposure and/or aperture, you select the framing of the photograph and its composition. If you are shooting in a studio you control the lighting. A professional photographer once told me that a real artist with a camera can take a black and white photograph of an apple and the viewer will know whether it is red, yellow or green. I learned what seemed like a million things from him but I still take pictures and he seldom misses the opportunity to tell me.
