I have worked graveyard for 20 years on and off. I have been robbed at gunpoint 3 times. In August, I was robbed at work and fought the robber off as he was going to shoot me. I quit in September. I am having recurring nightmares where people shoot me and I wake up screaming or I wake up and feel as if I have died in my sleep. The latest one was 1 night ago and it happens repeatedly. What can I do? I have not found a new job but it is disturbing my sleep and ruining my dispositon and the other night, I had to get up and look around and in the mirror and make sure I wasnt dead. The nightmares are movie quality and some nights I can see vivid scenarios of my being shot and dying...I need some kind of help !

you need to find a safe, comfortable job during normal business hours. It should be a job where you never see the general public, and the building should be located in a better part of town, away from the crackheads.

Keeping yourself busy at a new job will have your brain so occupied with new experiences, people, and surroundings, that you won't have time to think or dream about this past part of your life. Soon it will be history and gone.

I'd say Post traumatic stress. You went through a serious ordeal. Even though it happened multiple times, this final event has kinda pushed you over the edge, you need to talk to a therapist and deal with it. These nightmares wont go away unless you face them. It may be yourself telling you how subconsciously you were scared.

You need to see a therapist who's trained to treat anxiety from recurring dreams. When you think of your robbery experience, you replay the scenario in your mind, which is causing you to dream your worse fear. You need to put your thoughts on anything but your robbery experience. Perhaps reading a fiction novel, or watching a movie that doesn't involve robbery, or a scene where someone gets killed. Any violent scenes may trigger your memory of your experience as a robbery victim.

Definitely get some professional help. Its not healthy not to sleep and I'm sure that it is disturbing the rest of you waking life as well. Talk to a therapist. They can help you or at the very least give you some sleeping pills to help you fall and stay asleep.

You could be experiencing some form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I think, if nothing else, you could benefit from seeing a therapist.

you are obviously suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. find a therapist trained in EMDR, it is an amazing form of treatment that works to resolve the problems you are having. I took EMDR when I was raped, it really does work.
