i just left fastweb.com and there was a lot of essay type scholarships available for kids as young sophmore. There was a greeting card scholarship by hallmark, and also one as intense as answering question's about 2008 presidential election
I haven't won anything from any of there sites yet or found too much for someone over 40 but I have found it very easy to use and possible resource for my 16 and 21 year old more traditional students. fastweb.com

Ask to see if the college you want to attend accepts the Imagine America Scholarship......this is basically an essay scholarship that is awarded to every high school in the country.

Also ask the college if they have any merit scholarships...3.5 *** gpa will usually get you that.

www.fastweb.com is also another good resource.

Not all high school counselors are that adept at keeping up with current scholarships. I know from first hand experience. Talk with your admission and financial aid person via your chosen college. They are usually up on those things (they should be) and will often have insight into that particular school's own scholarships.

Ask them if there is any state funding available. Each state is different.

3.5 grade average is not usually good enough to merit scholarships. Those that make 3.9 or better are looked at first. Talk to your high school counsellor, they have all that information.

Talk to your guidance counselor at school. They are paid to keep up with what is available in your area or wherever you plan to go to college.
