Not at all. As long as you don't put gobs of it in your sandwich, you should be alright.
The only real downside to mayonnaise is the calories. But if you use it in moderation, that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes. Some people don't pay attention to the serving size. A tablespoon of lite mayo is 49 calories and 5 grams of fat.
It's best to skip out on the mayo or least use lite mayo and as little as possible.

Mayo is mainly fat (oil), vinegar, salt and egg yolk is used as an emulsifier (helps in gelling).
If you use mayo in small quantities, then fat should not be a concern. If you are worried about fat, then use other condiments like mustard. I don't know about fat free-mayo. If you're going to use that, then you might as well use a little of the real stuff.
If you're worried about salmonella or e.coli from the egg yolk, you should have no worries. Mayo contains vinegar which acidifies mayo. Acids discourage bacterial growth.

One big health risk with mayo is when it is mixed in potato salad, put on a picnic table, then let sit in 90 degree temps for an hour or two.
The egg in the mayo goes rancid very quickly and can make one quite sick.

The judgment is somewhat yours, only pay attention on your physique. in case you sense ill or uncomfortable in any way than you will desire to probable shrink down on the mayo. I would rephrase your question, "Is mayonnaise really as delicious as a lot of people think it is?" And I would answer my own question, "Yes, it is very tasty. You will be happier and healthier if you eat a varied diet, and eat with a positive attitude of enjoyment, without eating to excess."
To help you get started, I recommend mayonnaise on french fries. I learned this trick when eating in Europe. It's very tasty. If you're gonna cut something out of your diet, make it something fake, something that you don't like much, something you eat out of habit and without thinking.

No health risks in mayo, but if you are concerned about fat content you can get 'lite' versions.

Hellmann's makes a variety with canola oil, which is a healthy fat. It still has the loads of calories any fat does, but you just have to watch your portion size.
