whats agood attention getting device for a speech on why we need hybrids to save the envirment. statistic or a shocking quote. anything ?

Know who are you talking to and what they are interested in?

Money? hybrids are cheaper to run

security? hybrids require less fuel imported for politically/environmentally sensitive areas.

Neighbourhood? hybrids are quieter when you leave for work in the morning. And are too expensive for those "undesirable" types to race around in (though I think it would be good for dealers to cruise quietly and inconspicously in :) )

fashion/celebrity/image? lots of famous people are seen in them. It looks like you are being green even if you drive to local shops at over 100mph

environment? Hybrids won't save the environment, we need to reduce consumption and our reliance on an industrial growth ecomomy see http://www.greatturningtimes.org for ideas.

This is based on a speech I heard about at the University of Arizona many years ago and always thought it was a great way to get the audiences attention, changed it up a little for your subject. Assuming you are Anglo (not Filipino), dress and make up your face to look Filipino. Begin your speech with how much better Filipino cuisine is along with benefit of the Filipino culture. Don't leave anything out while embellishing Filipino customs, culture and life style. When you get to the end and are pretty sure the audience thinks you are a Filipino fanatic bordering on racism, pull off the wig,wipe off your face (bend down behind a podium to do this), and when you stand back up as an all American Anglo (if you are Black or Hispanic it will work the same) make the statement: On the other hand, nothing like a big Mac with fries while surfing the single section of E-Harmony. ;)

Go to A123 Systems.com. Go to Applications. Go to Chart 5 of 6. This is a chart for an Argonne National Labs test where the scientists installed A123 batteries in a Prius and got 174 Miles Per Gallon! Show the class this chart, then make the point that we are in Iraq to defend our supply of oil from the Mideast. Thousands of people have died so that we can drive our massive cars and trucks around.

See if you can get a gas-mask from an army-surplus store - or maybe borrow one. Walk up to your audience wearing it. Then take it off and tell them that unless they are prepared to condemn their grandkids and great-grandkids to wearing gas masks they had better start thinking about lowering the levels of pollutants in the environment.

You could also google the statistics for the increases in the rates of asthma over the last 30 years - where levels have shot up enormously reflecting all the chemicals we dump into our world's air supplies.
