This has seriously been bugging me. Everytime someone says religion, no matter what for, everyone starts arguing about which ones best. What I've read leads me to believe that the point is for people to do good things and to be good to others and all that. So why the heck does it matter which is best when almost all of them have an emphasis on being a good person. Why do we have to turn things that are beautiful into something to war over. No this is not an invitation to talk about the 'war'.

People take their religions very, very seriously. Many religions teach that if don't follow their rules or believe what they tell you to believe then that automatically makes you a bad or evil person. It would be wonderful if we could all just agree to disagree and be thankful that most of our religions teach peace and love, but unfortunately most people can't follow the tenets of their own religion. Even me occasionally.

"Unfortunately, most mainstream religions teach that THAT religion is the only true one. That makes them argue over which one is better."

That's an excellent point that Frau Hunter made. In my "religion" we never talk about our religion. I'm a Baptist but we only talk about the Bible.

I grew up Catholic and it was more about being a Catholic than being a Christian. As far as I'm concerned if a person accepts that Jesus was sent by God to be the Savior of the world, then you're a Christian. That overrides the man-made stuff. The one thing that my church talks about is that it's wrong to be selective about what you will and won't believe in the Bible. It's an all or nothing kind of thing. My Pastor always talks about people who treat the Bible like it was a grocery store where they pick and choose what they like and don't like. It's all God's Word.

I've never been anything else but a Christian so I won't comment or judge them. That's God's job.

One thing that most religions can agree on is, that there is a God. After that is were the different religions come in at. People join religions that best fit their beliefs. But faith is more than religion, and you are right, it is not something to war about. I never tell people that my religion is right, and theirs is wrong, reguardless of what I think or believe. I think that faith in God and Jesus, is more important than religion. I don't argue religion, If some one asks a question though, I will answer it by what I believe. But not to start an argument, but to just answer the question to the best of my ability as to what I believe. Some people don't agree, and some don't agree and get hostel with it. But all we can do, is the best that we can, with out disrespect, according to how we believe.

Because it is more than just being good; it's about obtaining a reward. And the argument is usually not only what the definition of good is, but also what the reward is and what one must do to obtain it.

Though I'm not knowledgeable in all religions, I don't think debate about things is considered wrong in any of them. Debate goes wrong, however, when it turns into argument, and argument becomes striving for superiority and dominance, and that turns into war. In other words, when people allow their human nature to get the better of them.

For man made religions this is a wise saying.

But in religion there is God who is warring against his enemy the devil. This war we have God who is truth and holy or good against the devil who is a liar and is evil. This is a necessary war. And it is a necessary war in the hearts minds and souls of mankind as well. For without this distinction we cannot make moral judgments that transcend the wisdom of man and lean on the understanding and wisdom of God.

There is war in religions because there is spiritual warfare in the heavens. That is why we as Christians are admonished to put on the whole armor of God. We all fight our battles in different ways. No one way is right for God has his own purpose for each of it to live his truth in our lives.

I agree that "arguing" over which religion is better just gives a bad name to the religion of those arguing. However, there *is* a principle involved here.

Many Atheists and Evolutionists get their jollies out of pointing out the number of religions as proof they are all man-made things with no actual basis in the concept of an all-powerful God Whom should have made it clear in the first place as to what constitutes the "correct" religion. Of course, we know the Atheists and Evolutionists are merely blind to the essential Character of God.

However, the principle is that all of these religions cannot *all* be correct -- for their teachings are too diverse and represent God in contradiction to Himself. Thus, it behooves the sincere seeker of Truth to, "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2Tim. 2:15)

As such, quantitative and qualitative comparison of one religion with another, and with the Bible, helps to expose just what is Truth. I certainly would want to belong to the religion which follows the Bible most closely. By airing these discussions, all have the opportunity to discover for themselves just what is Truth.

God bless.

I agree with Marx, Religion is just a way of controlling the masses. But, I am not an atheist. I totally think that people find God DESPITE religion..

Unfortunately, most mainstream religions teach that THAT religion is the only true one. That makes them argue over which one is better.

There are religious that accept other religions as valid as any other.

Well, not all beliefs are the same. Islam condones murder and the mistreatment of women. Catholicism says babies are born with sin. Wiccans believe nature is God. The key is to decide if you agree with the Bible and follow what is says without adding your own flair to it.

"O my Lord! Thou hast given me (something) of sovereignty and hast taught me (something) of the interpretation of events - Creator of the heavens and the earth! "But when Jesus became conscious of their disbelief, he cried: Who will be my helpers in the cause of Allah? The disciples said: We will be Allah's helpers. We believe in Allah, and bear thou witness that we have surrendered (unto Him). (52)" Al-Imran
