Latter-day Saints do not believe that human beings will ever be independent of God, or that they will ever cease to be surbordinate to God. They believe that to become as God means to overcome the world through the atonement of Jesus Christ (see 1 John 5:4-5; Revelation 2:7,11). Thus the faithful become heirs of god and joint-heirs with Christ and will inherit all things just as Christ inherits all things (see Romans 8:17; Galatians 4:7;1 Cor. 3:21-23; Rev. 21:7). They are received into the "church of the firstborn," meaning they inherit as though they were the firstborn (see Heb 12:23). There are no limitations on these scriptural declarations; those who become as God shall inherit all things. In that glorified state they will resemble our Savior; they will receive his glory and be one with him and with the Father (see 1 John 3:2; 1 Cor 15:49; 2 Cor 3:18; John 17:21-23: Philip 3;21).

Since the scriptures teach that those who gain eternal life will look like God, receive the inheritance of God, receive the glory of God, be one with God, sit upon the throne of God, and exercise the power and rule of God, then surely it cannot be un-Christian to conclude with C.S. lewis and others that such beings as these can be called gods, as long as we remember that this use of the term gods does not in any way reduce or limit the sovereignty of God our Father. That is how the early Christians used the term; it is how C.S. Lewis used the term; and it how Latter-day Saints use the term and understand the doctrine.

I know "Brother G the Mormon." Most people are cemented in their own preconceived religious notions, unable to even consider a viewpoint that may be contrary to theirs. I'm just asking for them to look at the scriptures at face value and decide for themselves. Unfortunately many are too hard-hearted (or heardheaded).

Very well articulated. Unfortunately, it's also well above the heads of most of the R&S folks. Most of them say "Hey, you Mormons think you can become gods? That's funny!" Most of the time there's not exactly what you'd call a serious theological discussion going on around here... :-)

It seems like you answered your own question. The Idea was called Theosis it has a long lineage. To paraphrase a statement that was made by Origen."it seems that the early apostles believed that man may on day become as God is."

I found this statement amazing in that it parallels the statement made by Joseph Smith

Arthur, I'm not LDS and I want to say this is the best written, most coherent question I've seen on R&S perhaps ever. When I first 'joined' Y!A I thought most if not all questions and discussions would be like this one. Ah, did I learn quickly. Great job!

No,we do not share the divine essence .
The Mormon view that we can become gods because we share that ability is not in the Bible

However, we can become partakers of the divine nature by the grace of adoption 2 pet1:5

The Eastern Orthodox teaching of theosis is not at all like that of the LDS or the Christo-Gnostics

God will be our God forever, it does matter if you become a Gos or any other thing.

If you cannot obey His laws and ordinances, you do not belong with Him!

That is the only simple facts I can give you.

Take it or leave it alone.

Go read http://www.fairlds.org

Don't bash with people who are ignorant, prejudiced and just hate our religion. Those you aren't going to sway, it is potential investigators and people newly baptized in the church.

It is better to point out the errors they make or twist the meaning of a doctrine or even plain lie what we believe.
Because you don't know who reads these posts.
Bashing with them really will do nothing. Good Luck

Okay-now I understand. I thought you were twisted somehow, but could not pull it out.
Are you on earth now? Or are you on another planet?

The bible is either infallible or isn't, then comes along an idiot who reads golden discs out of a hat and claims he will judge of judgement day along with Jesus and God.
