Where would be a good, somewhat isolated, tropical area to be in Australia? A good place to live a quiet life and be able to garden and live sustainably?
Thanks!

Defiantly Cairns or Port Douglas.
Plenty of isolated residential areas in Cairns and alot by the beaches. Trinity Beach, Palm Cove and Clifton Beach are the best. http://qldbeaches.com (links of left side) Port Douglas you will be paying a lot more as it's more touristy.
There is no shortage of renting an apartment/unit in a resort with full facilities if wish to go that way. to look at prices to buy or rent go to http://www.realestate.com.au search under postcode 4879 for Northern Beaches in Cairns.

Tropical Places In Australia

Anywhere in the north of Australia is pretty tropical. Just be sure you can handle the humidity first! It does depend on your definition of rural though, as we can get very small and remote areas.

Stay away from the main cities, otherwise Western Australia is very rural and somewhat remote whilst Queensland is spread out but at least has some larger regional areas with conveniences within a few hours drive. I'm from the Wide Bay area in Queensland originally, you may want to check that out. Bundaberg has a small population with a lot of retirees and is just 5 mins from the beach. The surrounding areas are also nice.

There are plenty of areas through the tropics from Western Australia to Queensland. My own preference is the sub-tropics of northern NSW where I grow all my own fruit and vegies. Tropical soils often need a lot of work to enrich them as the heavy summer rain leaches the nutrients from the soil.

If you want isolation, I would avoid the tourist areas like Cairns and Port Douglas and certainly go nowhere near the Gold Coast. Some of the smaller towns and villages between Townsville and Cairns such as Ingham or Innisfail might suit you or, in fact, any of the smaller places north of Brisbane. South of Brisbane doesn't get quiet or civilised until you cross the NSW border. There are areas near and south of Darwin where you might find the lifestyle you are looking for. The Kimberley in Western Australia is ruggedly beautiful and very isolated but much of the land is Aboriginal land and you won't be able to settle there. There could be areas worth checking near Kunnunurra or Wyndham.

Take a look at a good map of Australia and you will see a line that runs across the Country called the Tropic of Capricorn It runs across fro somewhere near Port Hedland in Western Australia to Rockhampton in Queensland All above the line is tropical a litlle below the line is semi tropics and down South they have four seasons

If you want quiet, isolated and tropical I'd be headed for the Kimberley or even Pilbara region of WA rather than Qld.

Check out coastal towns including: Karratha, Dampier, Wyndham, Kununurra, Broome (more touristy though, but beautiful place) Derby (about 3 hours from Broome, but without any tourists).

My ex-partner's grandparents love living in Broome, year round summer temperatures, beautiful lush garden, and real feeling of community where they live. They used to live in Karratha, and before that somewhere else in the Pilbara.

Alternatively consider Northern Territory too, I've heard its beautiful. But have no personal knowledge of it, so wont give u any advice there!
