Isn't this scary? Only 20 years ago, the pit bull was a beloved American mascot... thanks to "gangsta" culture, most people associate pit bulls with thugs, though most pit bull owners are regular, decent folks...
All the fake attack stories here... all the hatred... and the FEAR... a culture that thinks ALL dogs should be small, fluffy, and childlike (though we love those dogs too! but ours are legit as well!)
Can we fight this and protect our wonderful pets?
To those unconcerned... today it is my breed, tomorrow yours, Italy bans something like 92 breeds, including the BORDER COLLIE!

only if the MAJORITY of people want to ban it. Remember the majority rules. If more people want pits banned than not we don't have much choice.

Dog fighters and the gang culture have always been around and unfortunately the dog breed is being scape goated for irresponsible people's actions. That makes no sense to me. It's as illogical to ban various breeds as it would be to ban Corvettes or Jaguars because some people speed and have wrecks.
Any place that is attempting to pass anti-dog legislation is a place where we can write city officials with our concerns. Connect with sites that are monitoring laws so we know where to voice our concerns.
Investigate reported stories on TV and Newspapers for faulty info when it comes to reports of certain breeds that are alleged to have "Killed owner" or "mauled" and write to news stations and media with the info they did NOT investigate to uncover. Call and support media that air or write positive stories about the breed or that educate the public about NO KILL efforts in San Francisco where incentives and rewards are used to encourage spaying and neutering, and where education and support is available to help adopted animals stay with homes where they are having problems adjusting.
I think the more people write, fax and call legislators that are trying to ban breeds, or call when media misrepresents a breed with sensationalistic and erroneous reporting.
When it comes down to it, people in higher places do care about their positions. So if the are intent in passing repressive laws, let them know you will MOVE, you won't vacation there, etc. If a few people call and write, then they don't care. But if everyone that cares about this subject will write and fax legislators and connect with orgs that monitor BSL going on, then we can put a BITE on the BULL.

My American Pit Bull Terrier and I fight against BSL every day by showing our local community how a real Pit Bull behaves. I take her out with me every where, and I answer all the questions we get. Even when we get rude questions, I TRY to remain polite and answer with facts, rather than pissing them off even worse. The best way to fight against BSL is to be as educated about your breed as possible, and share your knowledge with family and friends. Be a responsible Pit Bull owner, and show off your well behaved Pit Bull.

AS a concerned and deeply committed and responsible dog owner and a loyal believer in constitutional law and a widely patriotic citizen of the USA: I am baffled to see this madness raging through out the land, as if mass extermination and sterilization of pet dogs will be the cure all to end dog attacks.
For every pit bull who attacks there are hundreds of thousand that do not.
The bond between people and dogs is older than civilization. So how in the 21st century, suddenly our oldest domestic animal has become the worst enemy civilization as ever Known.
In the 32 year period from 1965-2001 pit bulls have been blamed for an average of 2.48 fatalities per year. Every year there is approximately 350 people drowned in their bath tubs, that makes it 150 times more likely to be killed in your bath tub than by a pit bulls. !50 are killed be falling coconuts which make it 60 times more likely to be killed by a palm tree than by a pit bull. 40 children are drowned in a 5 gallon pail every year, that is 15 times greater than being killed by a pit bull. There are over 5 million pit bulls in the US, in the 50s and 60s they were the most popular family dog out numbering even golden retevers. 1.25 million pit bulls were killed in shelters last year. That makes it half million times more likely that a human will kill a pit bull.
I often wonder, if the law knows that the illegal drug business being transacted by gangs are the single biggest source of dangerous dogs, though they at this time prefer pit bulls. They turn these wonderful family dog into monster for security. They train and fight these poor dogs in order to make them “ tough”. Why don’t we focus on this underlying problem instead of passing laws that will be impossible to enforce and cost more money.
Banning Pit Bulls would be like banning cars because people get killed in car accidents! Who's responsible, the car or the driver/manufacturer? Any car can be deadly in the wrong hands or if built with defective parts. Same thing with dogs... Any dog. Pit Bulls are no more responsible for the way they are bred, raised and trained, than cars are responsible for the way they are designed, built and driven.
Simply put, the best argument against breed bans is that they are costly and ineffective. Breed bans are often a knee-jerk reaction from politicians who want to say they are "doing something", after a highly publicized dog attack (of any breed). This is a useless exercise.
Criminals habitually break laws, so having an "illegal breed" may indeed be attractive to them and might make them want to breed and sell more "illegal dogs". If their dog is confiscated and killed, they really don't care. They will just get another one because breed bans punish the dog, not the owner.
If a pit bull could talk what would they say? If someone finds me please remember, my owner is an idiot and please do not kill me for their mistakes. I”m just a dog. I depend on humans to keep me safe, to train me to be a good dog, to keep me up so I am not running loose. To show me love and warm. I’m just a dog, please help me be the best dog I can be.
As a last thought I believe they would have a prayer that would sound something like this :
Prayer of a Pit bull
Spirit in the sky, who watches over all animals:
It is my prayer and my request that you grant greater understanding,
and acceptance to humans;
those who love us, and those who hate us.
That they will know how loyal we are, how brave we are,
and how loving we are. Help them to accept us as a breed in whole, and not let the few tragedies shine brighter than the many great traits that we have. And those who would kill me,
let them know, I forgive them, even though I don't understand their hatred. And those who would beat me, let them know I still love them, even though it is not the honorable way.
Thank you for all the strong traits that you have given to me,
and my breed. Help those to know that I stand for
courage, strength, loyalty, and bravery.
And as my master already knows, let those who would come against my family know that I would surely die defending them.
And just one last thing that I would ask:
Let my master know, that if you should call me away,
that I will wait patiently at those pearly gates
until the one who chose me,
comes home.
Amen.

sorry we can't stop it other than making sure stupid people don't get dogs. i am in rescue work and now i have 16 dogs that is 10 border collies because people get them and don't see how high drive they are and send them to the pound. it breaks my heart but we will never be able to stop people from breeding dogs and selling them at safeway or walmart and not caring who they go to or if they get a good home and they are only in it for the money. i wish we could stop it but unfortunatly unless we make it a law to make sure stupid people don't breed or get dogs it will never stop.

I am afraid we can never stop it since we cannot stop the "gangsta" crowd from getting them!!!! They are the WHOLE problem!!!!!! The breed DOES require an owner that has a clue about dogs and is NOT for everyone. Until we can control who has them, they will try and control ANYONE having them!!!

Don't stop with posting here. Write your congressman and get your friends and neighbors to write too. I have and still do.
I also have dogs on the dangerous breed list.We ALL have a responsibility to ourselves our dogs and each other to make sure we yell loud enough and long enough to be heard.
If you are not registered to vote then do so NOW! Don't let the USA become another Italy.
