My niece is 12 and has really bad hair and I'm not making fun of her. It's full of knots and is greasy and it can show. She never showers. Her mom does nothing about it.

She is staying with me for the weekend, I want to teach her hygenie and teach her how to care for her hair. What should I do? HELP! I know I should brush out all of the knots and make her wash her hair, but I want her to do it, when she's not around me!

And it's not like I'm the only one that sees this. She wears her hair in pony-tails and the back part is maded and knotty and then there is the same thing but smaller and straight.

Aburn
Straight
Blonde highlights

Glad that she'll be staying with you since you want to help her with her hygiene. I think you should ask her when she likes to take a bath everyday because you thought you would treat her to some new special girly bath things including some detangler. Encourage her that she smells nice and tell her how pretty her hair is and how important it is to take good care of it. Encouragement and praise are what kids thrive on. When she goes home tell her mom that you two had a good time and give her a goody set of a bath stuff that her daughter can use every night because she like doing this at your house. This would be a way to make like bath time was fun at your house and that mom should have it as a routine without offending her parenting skills.

*If your comfortable ask Mom if she's having trouble getting her daughter to care about hygiene...and say that you want to try to help. =) Good luck!

Tell her that personal hygiene is very important. She's turning that age where she may not really care about it, but soon it's going to be more noticeable to other people around her. Teach her how to comb through her hair (maybe get a spray detangler for her to take home?) after getting all the knots out and then wash it thoroughly for her in the sink before you send her off to the shower. Tell her that she should wash everywhere and if she's worried about how long it might take, tell her that lots of people can take 15 minute showers and be just fine. Show her how to comb through wet hair then, and help her pull it back into something easy because it sounds like she just doesn't want to deal with it. Before she leaves have her wash her hair again (on her own) and then have her go through what she learned.

Try not to embarrass her, but let her know that other people might not be as kind as you are about things. She may be very angry and embarrassed at first, but just be kind about how you say things and what you do.

Give her a sort of description of how important it is for hygiene. Not just your hair but your teeth and other stuff. Exspecially with her becoming a teenager. You know what that means!
About the hair though, you should pay to give her a really cute, short haircut. It wouldn't be too much for your niece. It could easily just cut out the knot. Besides, short hair is easier to take care of. So if you helped her start off she would have an easier time, exspecially with short hair.
Help it was a little helpful. Plus the same thing was with me. I'm only fourteen and when I was about the age I didn't shower that much either. But after my mom gave me the hygiene talk I take very good care of myself. So it might help. Also you could talk to her mom. It might help.

To Actulley tell her this and everything,go somewhere like Mcdonalds or some place classier like the Olive garden and get dinner and just tell her how she should be like washing her hair Everyday or every other day.Buy Shampoo And Conditioner, before you get there and say if you use this whenever your mom or someone says to take a shower do it.And on average shampoo and conditior sometimes last about a months before it is gone if you use it everyday or every other day.Tell her the next time i see you and your hair is not greasy and perfect i will take you to the salon and get you more highlites and maybe they will curl your hair.
