The main distinction is in application- Ketchup is not a sauce, but a condiment. It is meant to be used in much smaller quantities and is thus more pungent. Typically, Ketchup contains more sugar and usually contains vinegar.

Tomato sauce is a generic term for any tomato-based sauces, of which there are many. Contrary to many of the answers here, tomato sauce need not include aromatics such as garlic or onion, nor flavoring agents such as salt or spices. Very technically, a tomato sauce is litterally any form of cut tomatoes used to coat a food. Crushing a few fresh tomatoes in your hand and tossing them with pasta is no less a sauce than the typical Italian pomodoro, or the French sauce romesco, a take on a Spanish tomato sauce.

If you're talking about the difference between Aussie Tomato Sauce and Ketchup as said above, it's the vinegar in Ketchup. Simply go to a major supermarket and they would usually have both and compare the ingredients. Technically of course Ketchup is a Type of Tomato Sauce, which is why a lot of Aussies are so adamant that Ketchup is the same stuff as the Australian type. The history apparently has something to do with the ingredients available at the time to mass produce, not far from the difference between Bourbon and Scotch (Corn vs Barley).

Yeah, read the labels. Ketchup is full of sugar where as Tomato sauce is cooked down with salt added. That's most of the difference other than spice differences but that changes from brand to brand as well.

A good tomato sauce is mainly water, tomato paste, salt, onion, garlic & lemon plus some spices i.e. aregeno, thyme. However, ketchup on the other hand is made from tomato paste, liquid sugar, white vinegar and onions plus some spices. Neither of them have any quantifiable fats or calories but they do have sodium & a low carbohydrate level. Both have their place in the kitchen and/or on the table.

4 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
3 tomatoes, chopped
1 tablespoon tomato puree
salt and pepper to taste

That's tomato sauce. Tomato with a few added onions.

The basic ingredients in modern ketchup are tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, salt, allspice, cloves, and cinnamon. Onions, celery, and other vegetables are frequent additions. In the UK, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Iran and New Zealand, their vinegar-less variant of ketchup is commonly referred to as tomato sauce or red gravy.

Ketchup has a ton more salt and sugar added, along with extra thickeners such as corn syrup. Tomato sauce on the other hand has a higher water content, thus why it has a looser consistency.
