So I am purchasing a dance pole to use for pole ballet (no NOT stripping) from ebay for about $200. I'm wondering how much duty I am looking to pay since it will be a large package (think- the size of a pole from ceiling to floor). It is being shipped from the US to me, here in Canada.

Use Ebay's Border Costs Calculator: http://www.myborderpro.com/2006/

Type in the ebay item number, select your destination and then click search.

For example, for an exercise pole listed at $275.00 US, the standard shipping was quoted at $35.43 and the duty rate at 6.5% -- $18.10. Also, Canada post fee of $5.00, and GST $17.79 and PST $23.72 (if shipping to Ontario). Total: $378.45 CAD.

The standard shipping might be more, depending on the listing, but the duty rate of 6.5% seems to be consistent.

Duty will depend on value, and what the item is classified as, and there will probably be GST as well. Shipping is a separate cost. And, some couriers have whopping service charges to clear something through customs, on top of the other fees.

Mail can be good since the service charge is only about $5, but size might be a problem. I had a look at http://www.usps.com but it wasn't obvious what the size restrictions on international shipments are. For domestic parcels, "Maximum size is length + width around largest point = 130” So maybe a "dance pole" could be shipped.
Try phoning 1-800-ASK-USPS, or contact them through the web site.

You might want to contact Canada customs, I am not sure of the percentage they charge, however a quick phone call should set you straight.
