This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with [his] finger wrote on the ground, [as though he heard them not].

John 8:6

What do you think he was writing in the ground and why did he start to write in the ground when they came at him?

Some speculate, and I agree, that he was writting the names of the accusers and their sins. Perhaps each person saw only their name and list of sins.

I've learnt that in the Old Testament, when God wrote the ten commandments on the stone tablets, He wrote with His finger.

"When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God."
(Exodus 31:18)

So in this instance, Jesus wrote on the ground with His finger to demonstrate He is the One who gave the law in the first place. And earlier on, at the Mount of Beatitudes, Jesus had told the crowds that the law is so perfect that no one can keep the law, because they had mistakenly thought they could be made righteous by obeying the law and looked down on others. (Matthew 5:21-30)

So, in this scene at the temple, when the Pharisees saw Jesus writing the ten commandments, the law convicted them of their sins. For all have committed murder when they harboured hatred in their heart. All have committed adultery when they looked at women lustfully in the past.

By the time Jesus stood up and said to them, "If any of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her", they began to go away one at a time, the older ones first. (John 8:8-9) Because Jesus has showed them the perfection of the law, and no one was able to keep it, for the law was meant to show us we are sinners.

Some time later, after Jesus died and rose again and ascended to be with His Father in heaven, He gave the revelation of the gospel to the apostle Paul, who wrote in his epistle to the church: "Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." (Romans 3:19-20)

Isn't our Lord an amazing person brother!
Here are these proud Pharicees and the Self righteous scribes trying once again to put the Lord in a position to contradict Himself. And what does the Lord do?
He stooped down and wrote with His finger on the ground.
The Lord Jesus stooping down was a sign done to humble and calm the proud and self righteous scribes and pharisees.
I think brother that He was writing" Who among you is without sin?"

We see in verse 7.
But when they persisted in questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her"

Wow,
One by one ..from the oldest to the youngest they dropped their stones.
The Lord was amazing in the way He dealt with self righteousness and provoking tempters.

Thank You Lord.

He probably wrote out names/incidents of those who sinned with the ones wanting to throw stones... [ie a dude named Jerry standing there with his gnarley stone - Jesus bends down and wrote Isabelle; the town harlot or something like that.] Whatever it was, they left one by one....

He was writing their names in the earth because they would soon depart from Him. Their hearts had departed from the Lord. Jeremiah 17:13

Jesus knew the hearts of all men and was very likely inscribing the words, liar, theif, pride etc.. and the Bible states that each one walked away after "hearing"
