They ask to join, it is the only way to become a Freemason.
Entry requirements are:
1) Belief in a supreme being
2) Male
3) Mature age (normally 21, some areas and circumstances 18)
4) Be of good character
Knowing a freemason is not required, when you ask to join you will meet 3 brethren of the lodge who will sign your petition should you wish to continue.
I didn't know any freemasons before I joined.

Just as a side note to those stating the Order of the Eastern Star as the womens Freemasonry, OES is NOT FREEMASONRY it is merely a group for females related directly or through marriage to be a part of, with their male relations who are Freemasons. Mainstream Freemasonry does not recognise any group claiming to be Freemasonry who accepts women, however there are two groups LDH, mixed gender and HFAF,women only, who claim to practise the same as Freemasonry and call themselves Freemasons if a women is adament on joining a group available to them of which will be similar.
Order of the Eastern star, to re-state, is NOT FREEMASONRY, or a FEMALE FORM OF FREEMASONRY and is not even recognised as a masonic group at all globally.

Contact your local lodge and ask them to join. If you need help finding one, let me know and I will help.
Women would join the Eastern Star (a local Freemason Lodge can help you with that) but in most places you need to be related to a Freemason to join the Eastern Star.

Girls are actually Eastern Stars not Freemasons - that is a men's society.
