I finished Uni in June 2007 - I studied Mechanical Engineering. I have been working at a company as a CAD Technician. This job is slightly unrelated (more construction/architectural based). Thus I have been looking for a job more suitable as I find it a bit boring - drawing buildings/structures on the computer.
As an Engineer I think more logically than my colleagues & they seem to only know about the products the company fabricates. All the products are externally supplied and we do not manufacture.
I want a more logic based job. It seems my colleagues are not engineers as they are CLUELESS when it comes to mathematics/chemistry/physics - I can't have an engineering discussion with them.
I was ill last week for 2 days - went back to work Monday. I was called to office by my boss & he asked if I have my eye on another job. I said yeah as I'm open minded. He wants me to stay long term. When I was ill I got a feeling he checked my computer's internet history!

It may be his computer, granted. But it doesn't give him the right to pry in my life when he knows Agencies are still in touch with me -- he's known that before I started and he knows my capablities (nobody else in my office has a degree)

Boy, do you live in a dream world! Your employer has every right and would be negligent if he didn't monitor and check your email and internet use on the company's computer used on company time.
Don't be so huffy. It will only drive the women away...☺
Really, though, you should try and get a job that uses your skills where you can get the experience you really need to get your life going. It is easy to settle for what is in front of you, but as an engineer, you will start to decay a rot unless you are challenged. If you waste your life too long, you might end up going to Law School and then you might as well flush your happiness down the toilet (a toilet you could have been designing in the right job!).

Bro, I have been there! I have to tell you that you have to be ethical about it, however, you should know that you are just passing through, you need to continue searching for the right job that totally fits yours degree, knowledge and ambitions. You have to convince yourself that, and convince your boss that you are a long term committer to him and your tenure with the company, you don't want to leave with bad reputation, I have done that and finally got my former boss as one of my recommenders for my engineering job. To answer your question, YES, companies do entitle and grant bosses the right to look through their employees e-mails, that's very normal and explained as a company interest. Corporate America does do that.
Just keep looking for good full engineering jobs, you should be able to find one with good CAD experience along with good education and some luck!
Good luck!

Yes, the computer is his. Just remember, you are using his time and his equipment to look for another job. That is not ethical. Granted a good boss would respect your privacy. However, a good employee should not take advantage of the employer either.

C'mon.....welcome to the REAL world......why would you put yourself in jeopardy and use the company's computer to find another job? OF course they can track and see what you are doing....that is how they get rid of "deadbeats" who use the company time to email their friends and look at porno sites and whatever else other than their work.....The company has a right to spy on you! Commonsense only!

If I were you I wouldn't put anything private on a work's computer, anyone can access it. Keep you private life private. I've always done this with work colleagues. Sometimes if they know to much they can become jealous so I keep my thoughts and actions to myself and just agree with everyone, that way you never upset anyone.
Hope this helps and have a nice weekend. (hope you're better now) ;)

Unfortunately, in past cases, employers have always won lawsuits over privacy issues, at least with respect to company computers.
That's why it's always good to have a few messages in the pile entitled "My Boss" in which you say good things about him/her! ;-) Kinda offsets the messages about looking for other work.

So you're answering personal emails on the works PC, and you think it's 'none of their business' . You're wrong. They have the right to state what you may and may not do on their equipment.

Henry Ford used to go to his employees homes and make sure they were tidy and dust free. We've come a long way.
