I prefer to avoid it and use other artificial sweeteners. It has a problem in that at relatively low temperatures it breaks down into several nasty substances, including formaldehyde. For this reason, you should never use it in anything that is hot, such as putting it in coffee. (unfortunately, you will see it in packets for sweetening coffee in places like McDonald's and Starbucks.) It isn't as bad in Coke, but your body is warm enough that it will create some formaldehyde in digesting it.

It's aspartame, and studies have linked it to some dangerous neurological health defects. I wold stop drinking Diet Coke, it probably at the very least screws with your insulin levels. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with Coke, sure drinking Diet is better, but only to a certain degree. There are plenty of other choices out there for drinks, you just need to be disciplined enough to cut out the crap and drink beneficial liquids like water, tea and natural fruit juices.

All the sugar substitutes have some issues. They were approved very quickly due to political pressure, so the actual side effects will not be known for a long time. In the meantime, they all have some side-effects and those effects tend to be related to areas they cause inflamation and will result in future cancers being caused. Rather than drinking a chemical cocktail, you should try water - add a little real lemon or lime juice to flavor it.

Yes, aspartame is in formaldehyde. It has also been known to cause cancer. You already know it's bad for you or else you wouldn't even be asking the question!
