The 80GB PS3 costs $499(Comes with MotorStorm) and the 40GB PS3 costs $399 in the U.S.
40GB isn't compatible with PS2 games.
80GB is compatible, but limited on PS2 games(doesn't support all PS2 games)

On a side note, the 80GB version comes with Motorstorm and the 40GB version comes with Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray. The 40GB can not play PS2 games.
