I'm baking sugar cookies right now and the recipe says 1 cup of butter. that seems like waaay to much because 1 cup of butter is equal to 2 sticks right? If i reduce the butter will it mess up the cookies?

1 cup of butter is the average amount. Normally there are 1-2 cups of sugar and 2- 2.5 cups of flour per cup of butter. If your other ingredients are within this range then the amount is correct. Reducing the butter significantly will make the cookies tough due to lack of moisture so follow the recipe!

You do what the recipe says to do. If it says 1 cup then you use 1 cup. That is why there are recipes.

Cookie recipes always call for a lot of butter. It just is. And this is why they taste so good!!
