Half Moon Bay isn't a good surfing beach for most of the year and is subject to severe low tides, hence the tide pools that make the area famous. You are probably thinking more about what they call Mavericks. Arguably some of the largest waves in the world. Mavericks are not for beginners or novices but only the advanced. Hawaiian professional surfer Mark Foo died out there among others.

You wont surf Mavs, dont be a dumba** ...... HMB, the jetties are consistently small, everytime I force via. It needs a powerful south swell. With a N or NW swell interior the water, down waaay interior Pillar factor interior the bay would have waves, regularly closeouts. There are a ton of solid spots south of HMB going torwards santa cruz. basically convey your 4/3 and a pal or 2 and pay attention for the "locals"

Mark Foo surfed there in 1994 and look what happened to him. You might want to check out the DVD Step Into Liquid and see what they called the Maverick Crew there.
