My first parakeet, also had a lump, just a little lower in her chest and belly. I took her to the vet, it was a cancerous tumor. She was breathing hard also, and he said, she will be gone in a week. I kept her alive, by hand feeding her for a month. Before she died, her one leg and foot became partially paralyzed. Before I took her to the vet, I went to the library and read up on it, and females are more likely to get those lumps. I hope it is just something stuck in her crop, but from past experience, it might not be. Sad but true.

If it is above his keel bone then it could be a full crop.

If you are concerned by his breathing you should take him to a vet. Better to get a clean bill of health than to wait until he is sitting at the bottom of his cage.

Birds are very good at hiding their illnes until it too late.
