Now very long distance but very steep. Whenever I come up of these hills my thighs ache and I dont' think I can go on much longer but I do. I've tried running flat footed and on my toes. Any more sugestions?

Running uphill is similar to running into a strong head wind.\
Shorten your stride, lean into the hill slightly.
Drive off the balls of your feet.
This is one time where you are basically pulling yourself rather than pushing yourself when running.

Do not run flat footed.
If you hunch over a little, shorten your stride, and arm action, get your knees up you will run better.

It is not going to be easy, and yes your thighs ache and you don't think you can go on much longer.
Practice running up hills, power your way up.
When you get to the top, stand up straight, take a big breath, shake out your arms and shoulders, and run down the hill or on the flat with long normal strides.

If you do it correctly you will gain on the other runners going up, and make even more distance running down.

Doing hill intervals will help your form and cardiovascular system to do better.

lean forward and pump your arms.
just remember when you hit the top of the hill you will get a straight away or down hill, so it will just get easier.

use your arms, it makes it a lot easier running uphill
