In an attempt to update my free version of AVG I continue to get:
Local machine: installation failed
Initialization:
Error: Checking of state of the item file microavi.avg failed.
File opening failed. %FILE% = "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\microavi.avg"
Invalid argument
Can anyone help me, I wanted reinstall it, but can't?

There are probably some corrupted registry keys which are preventing you from uninstalling and reinstalling AVG. The Windows registry is like a checklist of all the programs and personal settings on your computer. I recommend you try using an uninstaller program. Uninstaller programs are special programs which scan for orphaned registry keys and files. There are several programs available. You can use Your Uninstaller. It is shareware, which means that there is a free trial period after which you have to pay to continue using it. Install the program and have it catalog all programs installed on your computer. On that list, select AVG and have Your Uninstaller uninstall it. You can also browse to where the program files are locating (i.e My Computer > C: > Program Files > AVG...Once you have uninstalled the old version, you can go ahead and install the new version.

go to www.ursoftware.com and download YourUninstaller!. it should do the trick.

if you try to update it and it says somethin like it couldnt install the update, or couldnt update, look under your C: drive and if there is an AVG folder in it, sometimes it has failed updates in there. delete them and try to update again, or go to C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free and down near the bottom will be a file called "upd_vers.cfg", delete it and then it should update. i had this problem before.
