It means He payed my debt and set me free.

I deserved to be on that cross (Yes, I really did deserve it, more than most here I think, my old self and Saul of Tarsus had a lot in common...) but He did it for me.

Joseph Smith's Article 3 of our Articles of Faith sums it up well for me. "We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel."

The word "atone" means "to cover". Thus, atonement speaks of covering.

In Genesis 3:7, we see that after Adam and Eve sinned, they knew that they were naked and sewed fig leaves together to make themselves coverings. Then in Genesis 3:31 we see God making them coverings from animal skins. This is a beautiful picture of atonement and it introduced the fact that some sins carried the death penalty and thus would need blood to be shed to atone for them or cover them.

Adam broke the law (God’s command), and ate the forbidden fruit. Death was the penalty for breaking that law but his death was postponed 930 years because innocent animals died in his place (atonement).

We see another picture of atonement in the story of Noah's Ark. It says:

Genesis 6:14 (NKJV) Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.

The same Hebrew word is translated there twice, once as cover and once as pitch. Pitch is tar. It waterproofed the Ark.

So, God was really saying: Cover it inside and outside with covering, or atone it inside and outside with atonement. Of course, it would not make sense being translated into English that way but it is worthy to note that there is a double-use of the word, which means that it is emphasized strongly.

Thus, the Ark of Noah is a picture of atonement. Atonement kept them afloat. It kept them waterproof. It sealed off all the cracks between the wood. It kept them safe when the world as they knew it ended. It saved them from destruction.

Later on, after the Israelites rejected God on Mount Sinai, God then instituted animal sacrifices as part of the Law of Moses. The blood of those sacrifices would atone for their sin.

Romans 4:7-8 (NKJV) “ Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the LORD shall not impute sin.”

And so, through the generations, the blood of those innocent creatures atoned / covered their sins... until one day the blood of a Man was poured out on their behalf on a Cross.

Only one man could ever die in their place: that is the Man who walked in their place between the halves of the carcasses in the Blood Covenant walk in Genesis 15:17. That Man is Jesus.

The Blood of Jesus did what the blood of no other could ever do: It did not just atone (cover) their sins. Instead, it washed them away. It completely forgave them. A covering is temporary and it does not change what is under the covering. Forgiveness, however, is a permanent eraser. The blood of animals postpones death, but the Blood of Jesus takes you to the other side of resurrection where death cannot ever touch you again.

Hebrews 10:3-4 (NKJV) But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

That is what the Atonement of Jesus Christ means to me.

God bless you!

you're making an exceptionally stable element. Christians have made Jesus their savior - no longer a prophet. they have married that concept into their faith. they have even made Jesus an extension of God. even while it mentions that there is in uncomplicated terms one God - they do no longer seem to comprehend we are all toddlers of God. all of us got here from a similar tree and in the event that they're sinners then they ought to have fallen from a foul tree, in accordance to what the bible teaches. Why improve into the NT written in Greek and the OT written in Hebrew? maximum of mysteries that maximum do no longer complication to truly question their information of the classes. How can yet another save you while it for sure states that, what you sow you will gain - So while you're making errors they're forgiven by ability of yet another prophet? So, which regulation applies? you ought to pay to your errors or yet another can launch you from them? additionally, I be conscious that once making use of the call Allah, many Christians insult God making use of that call - yet nevertheless honor different countries and languages for making use of the names utilized in theirs, which includes Dios, Krishna, Khoda, Gott, Theos, etc. there are various prophets and one Dios, inspite of what that's spoke of as. Nature is yet another plausible call for God for people who're no longer particular as to how they have been given right here. in case your faith separates you from the different beings on the planet then perhaps those coaching choose correction.
