This is an interesting question, and I will give you my opinion as a Christian.
I believe that God really did create mankind, and I also believe that God created in mankind a special ability to know Him. If that is so, then that ability exists not only in Christians, but in non-Christians as well. So, how does one call themselves an atheist? The word literally means "no God". The Bible says God has revealed Himself through His creation in such a way that mankind is "without excuse" for not recognizing Him.
Romans 1:20 "For since the creation of the world His (God's)invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse."
So, if that is true, how is it possible that some can say that there is no God? The answer is found in the previous verses, verses 18-19:
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them."
This verse says that they "suppress the truth in unrighteousness". In other words, it is a choice between acknowledging God, and acknowledging their own sinfulness (and thus their need of God's forgiveness), or ignoring them both. If they are ignoring a God that wants them to know Him, is it any surprise that we who believe in God are offensive to them? Jesus said, "If they hated me, they will hate you."
I will leave it to you to read the rest of Romans chapter 1. It explains what happens when someone willingly ignores God.
It explains a lot about the world we find ourselves in today.
This may make some atheists mad, but these are not my words, but God's words. He should know.
I hope you are a Christian, and that you are looking for the coming of the Lord Jesus. It could be soon!
Even so, come Lord Jesus!

Not all do. I don't care how you choose to believe. It's your right to do so. I do care however, when religious people (I realize this doesn't necessarily include you) make assumptions like America is supposed to be a Christian nation or people who don't believe in your God are bad or miserable or not spiritual. Religion wasn't much of an issue at all for me until it started affecting the way people wanted to teach evolutionary theory in my home state and Christianity started being a major part of my daughter's school assemblies.

People who believe in God obey His commandments.
The law of God is based on love. Jesus said this Himself; " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 'This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. 'All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40. God is love. It is as simple as that.
Neither many atheists nor many claiming to be Christian can comprehend such a simple revelation. Many non believers while claiming to be intelligent beings will take examples that do not represent this standard for love, instead of basing their claims on the standard Himself as fuel for their debacle. They are using cheap wet toilet paper to build bridges. Surely, no one claiming any such human intellect could be THAT stupid.
This should pilot one to perhaps a conclusion: its called ignorance. But, when people truly know better, they intentionally bare false witness and have an even bigger problem within themselves. People who have either a misunderstanding of or repulsion towards love really need to be reevaluating themselves rather than obsessing over what others are doing.
For lack of reasoning or lack of love, they have taken issue with something that was never a problem to begin with.

I, for one Atheist, don't give a flying **** what others believe in. Their actions are all that matter. And when their actions involve coming to my home and telling me that are saving from damnation, I can't help but think, "What exactly did I do to deserve eternal damnation?".
No, outside of the occasional self-righteous loud mouth lecturing strangers on God and ******* asshole missionaries, I'm perfectly comfortable in people believe whatever they want.
Hell, it doesn't even bother when they want to advertise their beliefs. Do it like the Jehovah's. They leave a WatchTower by my door at least once a month. That's cool. I even read it once in a while. Just don't get in my face with your self-righteous, closed-minded dogma, and attempt to "shine the light" on my poor soul. If I wanna have a relationship with Christ, Satan, or Allah, it's my business.

As an atheist I do NOT care who believes in what God, it's only the loss of Separation between Church and State that I bemoan. Believe what you want, in your home and your place of worship and in your heart, but do not try to push through "faith based initiatives", prayer in government and shool, or Creationism in ANY publically funded school.

I'm not Atheist and I've never considered asking an Atheist why they are Atheist. I really don't care if they are Atheist.
I'll say it is probably for the same reason San Francisco has Gay Parades.

Some one posted a question, "why do atheists care about religion?" and posted a you tube video about the subject.
The guy on you tube ranted about the perception people have about atheists and blamed religion for that perception.
Instead of working on changing people's perception this particular atheists decided that eliminating religion would change the perception.
As if becoming what people think you are will change what people think about you.
It was really, really sad.
So one of the answers is that some atheists think that forcing people to abandon religion will change the perception that people have about atheists being fascists.

I am happy that there are believers in God (assuming there is one) and I respect them that belief system despite it's many, many flaws. Where I have a problem is when they insist that I believe as they do or suffer some punishment (burn in Hell...assuming there is one). I should be just as free to choose to question as not believe or actully fervently believe WITHOUT having another belief system crammed down my throat with threat of HELL. PEACE & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
