What type of health care system works best for retired clergy? I was wondering because of the catholic church isn't only based in the us? Also any links or sources would help.

I don't think there is any one way to provide health care to all retired priests because they all have different needs.

In my diocese, some of our retired priests live in a retirement home built specially for them. There are 16 800sq.ft. apartments and they can keep their cars (garages provided). Three sisters live in a tiny convent in the building and do all the cooking and cleaning and laundry and some of the light health-care duties (like making sure Fr. K___ gets his pills on time or taking Fr. G___, who is going blind, to the doctor).

We have at least two other retired priests living in area nursing homes because of their health needs. One retired priest lives with his sister and brother-in-law because he can't live by himself but she is more than happy to take care of him. Another of our retired priests returned to his native Ireland, and at least two are living in the homes they inherited from their parents, quite independently.

All of our priests use some of their salary to pay for long-term care health insurance to help cover the costs if they need extensive nursing care.

I don't think I'm answering your question very well, but that's what I know about what goes on where I live.
